So… DC puts up nice fancy bike lanes on 15th street NW, and in the stretch around Dupont down to McPherson Square took all the parking meters down.

Friday and today they’re got contractors putting them all back up. That’s the way to save $$ :). I asked one of the guys the WTF? question I had to ask.. and he and his co-worker just laughed.. said “We thought the same thing, but they’re paying for it!”

Wait, they’re putting the meters back IN the cycletrack?

Yup. According to the contractor the intention is to make the right hand lane parking, and you have to walk across the cycletrack to feed the meter. That’s an accident waiting to happen.

People are still parking in the cycletracks anyway, so you might as well charge them. And maybe if there are tickets to be written (It doesn’t appear to actually be illegal to park in the cycletracks), the city might actually do some enforcement.

That design actually works well in New York and other places because there is a physical 3-4 ft buffer between the parked cars and the off-street cycletrack when vehicle passengers can offload and let doors swing open. We won’t have that here…
