ParticipantAnother side benefit: I’m learning about all of these state streets that I never knew before. (Yes, I admit it. I have never ridden on the WABA state avenues ride.) Never knew about Wyoming Ave. or Washington Ave. until today.

ParticipantI saw that they included a station at Hains Point in Round 2 (whenever that takes place). But they misspelled Hains Point.

ParticipantMeanwhile down at 12th & D St, SW (ya know, where there is a BFB and a CABI silver partner)…. “no station for you!”
L’sigh.

ParticipantFrom the press release:
To comment on the list of proposed locations, please email ddot.bikeshare@dc.gov by January 15, 2013.
Perhaps DDOT can be convinced to add a station at that location in the next round. Or even shift one of the proposed stations to that street. There is also the existing bike station at 12th & Independence SW, two blocks from D St.

ParticipantI get why, but it bugs me that everything North and West of Georgetown up to the District line is completely void of stations.
I suspect that a small station located at the Safeway on MacArthur might actually get some use:
a) if getting into Georgetown were a little easier (the sidewalk along Canal Road is fine, but no fun with cars whizzing by at 55mph, and getting up from the CCT onto Canal via the Foundry Branch tunnel on a CaBi must be impossible without walking – not to mention the Foxhall hill)
b)if getting up to AU from the Palisades didn’t involve either Foxhall, Arizona, or Loughboro. (Actually thinking about CaBi and hills, I’m curious if anyone has looked at CaBi ridership around/between stations where the terrain is really hilly, ie. are there many rides from the C&O Canal station all the way up Wisconsin? – I’ve played around with the CaBi data before – although not as much as JDantos – but didn’t think about hills and ridership at the time.

ParticipantWhat about a few along Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park, like by those picnic areas? That would be cool.
As for hills – Columbia Heights is a really high Bikeshare use area, and hill above Florida NW doesn’t seem to put too many people off. I know that’s not the biggest hill in the city, but it’s not insignificant.
Thought I have to say that the couple of Bikeshare commutes I’ve done now that I’m between bikes have not been the most fun. 15th by Meridian Hill Park was much more fun on a light road bike.

In some paper somewhere, there is a best practice that the optimum distance between consumer and station is…. I think its 1/3 mile. Well, from my office’s front door to the closest station is > 1/3 mile. In fact we are virtually surrounded by stations > 1/3 mile away (Smithsonian, L’Enfant, Waterfront, Jefferson Memorial). It makes it a hard sell when the walk to the station is so far (and there is a probability at the other end of the trip that there may be a similar problem). At this point, it is more viable to take a taxi or drive one’s car. We had a map guy draw up a map, that we submitted, that showed how 12th and D is this cute oasis with no service within that 1/3 mile radius.

ParticipantThe 2013 D.C. CaBi expansion is underway. They added three new stations in the Foggy Bottom/Constitution Ave. area today.
21st and Constitution Ave, NW
20th and Virginia Ave, NW
23rd and E Street, NWMany more stations in D.C. in the coming weeks. Then hopefully the Arlington expansion gets underway in the spring.

ParticipantWhat kills me is the vast wasteland between Connecticut Avenue (and Columbia Road at one point) and Wisconsin north of Dupont. There is this PERFECT place for a bikeshare station at the intersection of Kalorama and Connecticut that multiple people have asked for repeatedly, to no avail. 😡
