Serious one-bicycle accident this morning around 8:15 a.m. in the District coming off Memorial Bridge, on the sidewalk on the south side of Lincoln Circle at the ramp for northbound Ohio Drive. Bicyclist lost his front wheel and crashed hard onto the sidewalk. The bicyclist was seriously injured. It wasn’t clear if the wheel falling off caused the accident, or if he was dodging a car that failed to yield and missed the curb cut.

Thanks to about a half-dozen bicyclists who stopped to help — calling 911, talking to park rangers, flagging down police, and protecting and comforting the injured bicyclist. Bike commuters are a great community, and a lot of folks hurrying to work took the time to help out.

Thanks also to the Park Police for an extremely quick response. The first police car was on the scene less than 60 seconds after the 911 call, and four officers — car, motorcycle and bicycle — responded within three minutes and immediately called for an ambulance. Very rapid and professional response.

    John

Here’s my hope he recovers well too.

I rode right there about 10 minutes later and saw no sign of this. I hope that’s a good sign.

My wife and I were riding north on Ohio from the Tidal Basin and my wife would’ve ridden right past this (I continued up 23rd around the Lincoln rather than with her toward G-town) right about this time, but neither of us noticed anything. Hope the cyclists makes a quick recovery…some of the curb cuts in that area are ridiculously dangerous, with sharp angles and high curbs. Definitely a good reminder to take it easy during tourist season!
