You’re right, paint colors absolutely do matter during the day. That’s why there was a brief shift to fluorescent greens and yellows for fire trucks. Those colors were shown in research to have the highest visibility. Eventually departments decided that it was more important to be able to recognize a vehicle’s purpose quickly and resumed painting most fire trucks red. The puke-colored trucks were replaced and you see that less and less these days.
