I managed to convert two unenlightend souls on my way home last night, one on the Mt Vernon Trail at Hains Point and one on 4 Mile Run just east of the W Glebe Rd split off. These were both on bikes, my primary target for lighting up. It’s too hard to get the attention of a runner going in the opposite direction, and I’m not quite ready to turn around and stalk them.

I just came back from the Vienna Community Center where there were four bikes locked in the bike racks and none of them had lights. It’s gloomy and dark out there, cars have their headlights on even though it’s only four o’clock. Now these four bikes have some extra light too. I’m happy because I’m pretty sure these bikes belong to kids. Thank you Bike Arlington.

    Happy Thanksgiving,

Lights and bands made their way into the hands of workers who bike to their jobs in Shirlington restaurants and grocery stores tonight. Others found their way onto the handlebars of parked bikes that had no lights or mounts for lights. Thank you, BikeArlington. I wish you could have seen some of the grateful faces I saw tonight. These were really appreciated. Please let me know if any more are available for trail ninjas. I gave away all that I brought home Monday night.

Yeah, I lit up two more riders on my way home Wednesday. What I can never figure out is the cyclists with lights who won’t turn them on until it is completely dark out.

Batteries. One of the reasons I’ve converting my bike to operate both high and low intensity flashers and a headlight on one rechargeable bottle battery.

most lights will run darn near forever in blinky mode (some exaggeration, but still 10x as long as steady mode). once it’s dark enough to clearly see the blinky light on the ground, and too dark to see, switch to full on.

Due to the success of our last 2 lights for bikes giveaways (despite the rain on the last one, we still gave away a good number of lights to people in need), we will be providing yet another opportunity to light up Arlington county!

We’ll be at the W&OD and Custis Trail near Bon Air Park, same time (4:30/4:45 – 6:30), on Monday December 12th…and we’ll be hoping for some good weather.

Once again, we couldn’t do it without our volunteers, so if anyone is available it would be great to have you helping out!

    Thanks!!! :)

Is Bon Air Park where the W&OD and Custis intersect/combine?

I’m down to four sets to give away after attaching lights to three bikes in my bike rack at work last night. Wish I had had them with me for my ride home last night. There were lots of people out and I could have used 10 to 20 sets. I think there were several people taking advantage of the lovely weather who didn’t think about how early it is getting dark.
