Hey everybody! This Sunday is the time change and BikeArlington is doing our annual lights for bikes giveaway, but this year we’ve changed the name to:

    Lighten Up, Arlington!

We need volunteers to come help us give out stuff. So here are the details:

    • Monday, 11/7 – Rosslyn Bikeometer (corner of Lynn and Lee Highway)
    • Wednesday 11/9 – Columbia Pike (intersection of W&OD Trail and Columbia Pike, by the Learners Loop Park)

    4:30PM – 7:00PM, both days.

With the time change, we expect that many people will be caught out on their ride home from work without lights. We’ll be giving away small “be-seen” blinky lights and lots of reflective gear (vests, pant straps, reflective zipper pulls). We’ll be joined by our friends from WalkArlington and some other folks from other County organizations too.

Temps are looking pretty nice, so in expecting a large number of people riding and walking by we could use your help as volunteers! Feel free to stop by on your commute home and hang out for awhile. We’ll likely have leftovers that we’ll want to give out to Forum members who want to vanquish ninjas on their own as well.

Let us know if you can make it!

P.S. Crystal City BID is doing a similar event on Friday.

Thanks for being there folks! I grabbed 4-5 reflector bands to hand out, thinking that would get me to Falls Church. They were gone before I even reached the Corkscrew-o’-Death.

    HEADS UP:

Due to cold rainy weather, BikeArlington, WalkArlington and AIRE have decided to reschedule today’s Lighten Up event.

I thought about the giveaway tonight as I saw only 5 bikers on my way in.

    Thanks for rescheduling!

    One last update:
While for a brief moment AIRE considered running part of the event today, we’ve decided to fully cancel Wednesday and go all out for Thursday. Apologies for the quick updates here.
AIRE, BA and WA will be out tomorrow (11/10), with lights and reflective goodies galore.
4:30-7:00pm at the W&OD Trail and Columbia Pike.

Happy riding and see you then!

False. My ability to reference punk rock bands that I am too young to reasonably be aware of is quite clever. I was 4 years old when Zen Arcade was released.

    I talk about Mozart sometimes, so I’m a genius!

Great turnout last night! By the time I left around 7pm, I think almost 500 sets of blinky lights had been given away. Plus a lot of other BA/WA swag and who knows how many solar keychain lights and LED bulbs by AIRE.

My most satisfying handouts were to a little girl on a white bike with pink and purple flowers, the teenage Hispanic guy on a chopper-style chrome street bike (lights just added “bling”), and several leashed dogs bouncing around happy to have blinkies on their collars.

On my short ride home, I spotted another ninja cyclist at the corner of George Mason and Four Mile Run, and waited until he had the signal to cross so I could deck him out with lights. Then I was following another cyclist when I saw him stop to hand a light to a kid who was walking; I caught up later and thanked him.

ArlingtonRider and I rocked south Arlington, hopefully you’ll encounter fewer dark surprises when riding through the area.
