Wonder what brand of helmet.http://www.arlnow.com/2012/11/27/bicyclist-survives-after-dump-truck-rolls-over-his-head/
Just think – if he had run that red light instead of waiting, he could have avoided that truck running over his head.

Participant1) I don’t think helmets are designed to protect against that.
2) I wonder what “ran over his head” actually means. I find it somewhat hard to imagine the dump truck’s tire lifting 8-10 inches in the air as it literally rolls over the head + helmet. (I’d expect the more likely outcome to be the head+helmet wedging into the tire and being smeared on the ground.) Maybe it just grazed the side?

Looks like it could be modified pretty nicely for a Pugsley — for use in tourist season.

ParticipantGee Zuss. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to NOT have that mental image in my head every time a dump truck pulled up next to me and now it’ll be on the TV news. Glad to read the “non-life threatening injuries” tag line but for just plain creepiness this one is way up there. Next question is how long before you see this tested on Myth Busters?

Agreed, I’d imagine a dump truck would crush a bike helmet into many pieces if it just ran over one directly. They are made to break after all. Maybe the truck was empty and it was a lighter back wheel? Still crazy, but probably a good bit lighter than a front wheel with the engine weight.

I had a work buddy (now retired) who was my role model as a bike commuter, and who had the most incredible story, as he got HIS head run over by a truck in the spring of 1999 right at the crab shacks on the SW waterfront while riding his way to work one day. Not only did he survive, but he didn’t even want to go to the ER (DC EMS and MPD insisted) His helmet? A Louis Garneau. When he contacted them with his documented story, he got the response “well, we are pleased our helmet worked as designed.” Not even an offer from LG to replace it. But he never wears any other brand.

ParticipantWearing my helmet is much easier than finding out whether I should have.
