In case you missed it, Leonard Nimoy passed away today, at the age of 83.
The news has been featured on all the sci-fi and entertainment sites and general news sites like CNN and the Wall Street Journal. “Star Trek” had more influence than most TV shows, especially for one that only ran 3 seasons. The inventor of the cell phone said he was inspired by seeing the communicators on the show. NASA engineers and astronauts have said that they were inspired to study science and astronomy because of the show. The show is said to be the first to feature an interracial kiss on US television. Characters of different ethnicities and races were shown as regular members of the crew, which was unusual for TV back then. The Smithsonian plans to move the filming model of the USS Enterprise (used in the original series) to the redesigned Milestones of Flight gallery in the main entrance of the Air and Space Museum when renovations are complete next year. While the Enterprise was not a real ship, it represents a franchise that had a significant influence on science and space exploration in the U.S. and around the world.
