Continuing the “TdF riders are from a different planet” theme…..
During the individual TT stage coverage yesterday, Christian Vander Velde casually mentioned that Tony Martin was riding a 58 tooth main ring. The closeups showed he was also running a tiny corn cob cassette as well. Got gearing?
I’ve been told that they run larger gearing up front not because a standard road double isn’t enough, but because it keeps the chainline straighter (for less resistance) in the gears they mostly use.

He’s actually doing his Tommy Voeckler impersonation.

ParticipantOnboard camera from Marianne Vos, from the last 3.5 KM of La Course, the new one-day women’s race sponsored by the Tour de France. Vos won the inaugural race in Paris.

He would first have to unzip his jersey all the way.

I think La Course was not implemented that well, especially the U.S. television coverage and overall promotion. Hopefully the organizers and television partners will support the idea and possibly expand it into a multi-stage race, maybe a week?
I know many people talk about how women’s pro sports tend not to be as popular as the men’s versions, but two of the biggest sporting events feature women’s competitions, namely the Summer and Winter Olympics. Women’s gymnastics is one of the primary sports in the Summer Games and women’s figure skating is probably the key competition in the Winter Games. The Olympics draws hundreds of millions of television viewers around the world.
While La Course might not become as big as the Olympic Games, I think they could build it into a moderate success, if they do everything right.

And don’t forget tennis where I would dare say that nearly practically equal attention is paid to both the men’s and women’s draws at the televised tournaments. I like to think the same could be true of pro cycling.
Edit to add that another big plus of the way that tennis works is that men and women get paid equal prizes for winning/making it to X round of the tournament…

All you need to do is to buy Billie Jean King a road bike. She’ll have the promotion nailed up and equal prize money done in time for next season

Our resident sports writer could challenge Voss to a race and proceed to get smoked after a lot of smack talk.

La prego di accettare le mie congratulazioni per la vostra grande nazione.

It works. Interesting that Google Translate uses by default the absolutely most formal language possible and some awkward phrase construction, but it is understandable.
And I greatly appreciate your efforts to communicate in Italian (really my native language should be the official language of all things cycling related – unbiased opinion here).

ParticipantAbsolutely. And maybe you could help me understand… apparently (or so I have been told) there are other component manufacturers.
