Our happy hour on July 12 will also be a TdF viewing party for the 8 p.m. NBC recap/re-broadcast of one of the mointain stages. They have promised sound for us on the TVs, and there is a possibility that we might even be able to get a private room that seats 50 with a big screen TV.

Question – do we still want to start the happy hour at 5:30, or should we move it to 6:30?

Also, it would be very helpful for me to know (to the extent possible) how many are coming to this. All are invited, including spouses, friends and family, new cyclists or commuters, forum lurkers or non-forum cyclists, etc. I’ll add this info to my other post about the happy hour this evening.

I’m there but won’t make it till 6:30 at the earliest. Given the heatwave a private room might be really nice since we would have A/C.

Saw this on the Potomac Pedaler’s site:

Come join Potomac Pedalers for a Tour de France Happy Hour on July 18th at Rhodeside Grill in Arlington from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. (Same place as last year.) Meet people you only see on rides or those in other rider categories.

Appetizers will be provided by Potomac Pedalers and there will be a cash bar. We’ll be showing the 16thstage of the TdF which is from Pau to Bagnères-de-Luchon. Here is what the TDF website says about the stage:

“The layout of the stage and the future stakes may well upset the order at the top of general classification, four days before the end of the race. No matter what the gap is, the major stage in the Pyrénées will be dreaded by the wearer of the Yellow Jersey, who will have to defend his position while climbing the Tourmalet, the Aubisque, the Aspin and the Peyresourde!”

Rhodeside is located at 1836 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA just down from the Courthouse Metro Station (towards Roslyn) and a couple blocks from the Custis Trail. No registration required – just show up and have fun!

Should we continue with the July 12 Tour de France watching happy hour at Cap City in view of the Potomac Peddlers one?

My plan is to drop by both, but if I had to pick one, it would be your event, Kathy. There’s not a lot of overlap between the PPTC crowd and this one (alas), so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

For those that don’t really follow the Tour, know this – Stage 11 will be completely _)@(#@!#_)( #@# nuts, as pro cycling goes. Totally worth watching in the company of friends.

    Thanks so much, Mark.

Update: In view of all the people planning to come, I think we might be able get the room with the big screen.

It looks like the two events are on different days — the Cap City event on 7/12 and the PP event on 7/18, so there shouldn’t be a conflict — ?

I see two opportunities to ride bikes and drink beer. Sweet!

If I make it to the 12th I probably won’t be there til at least 6:30pm.

The tough part will be avoiding any spoilers in advance!

I probably won’t get there until 6:45ish. I promise not to eat Dirt’s dinner this time :)

I am in for both. 12th time is very flexible, probably around 6 pm. Wont stay for 8 pm TdF showing tho as the WOD turns into a pumpkin at sundown.

I’m supposed to make a short trip to Haiti this month, but I don’t really want to. I’d much rather hit these two Tour events. Fingers crossed that the trip will be postponed (again).

My little missus and I will definitely try to show up to this one. Will probably come for happy hour and food. Not sure if we’ll stay for much of the TdF though.

Many thanks to everyone who responded! We have a critical mass and are definitely on for the happy hour on Thursday, July 12. If no one objects, I think I’ll make at least tentative plans for this one to be indoors in air conditioned comfort. I’ll post the rest of the info under a thread relating to the happy hour.

The Tour de France starts tomorrow, and that will mark the beginning of three weeks of daily race-watching for me and many others. If you’re already a fan, I’m sure you already have a plan for watching. If you’re curious, I suggest checking out this link, which does a good job of describing how the Tour works, who’s riding, and how/when to watch. It’s definitely American-centric, but it’s a good way to see if pro cycling.

This is a great link, thanks Mark. Now I finally understand Tim’s reference to being a domestique during the Crystal Ride for Megan. I thought he was making the word up.
