2011 was a good year. Primary commuter bike got hit by a car, driver’s insurance bought me a new roadie. 165 of 165 workdays biked for a total of 3,468 miles. A full thousand less than the last two years because of my new office and short commute, but otherwise not bad.
This was my 3rd consecutive 100% bike-to-work year. 75% in 2008, and literally every day since 22 May 2008.
Here’s to an even better 2012, and year #4!
You were one of those kids that never missed a day of school, weren’t you?
An amazing achievement; my hat is off to you.

Another great day to commute by bike! You don’t get views like this from I-66.

ParticipantI set a goal for myself at the beginning of the year to try to average 10 miles per day on the bike for the whole year. Happy to report that today I broke the 4000 mile mark! Also rode in my first century this year, the Seagull, which was crowded and windy, but a lot of fun! looking forward to more cycling adventures in 2012!

ParticipantGreat photo Dana! Almost looks like you are on the water taking the shot.

ParticipantThanks. On the sea wall at Hains Point. Rosslyn building with the dawn’s light on them forced me to stop and get the photo.

I hope to commute a lot more in 2012, once spring arrives. Not because of the weather but because I have pre-tax paycheck deductions I set up over a year ago for parking that are use-or-lose. I kept putting off using up the credit (by cycling in) and now I have to drive and park something like 50 days to use it up
Isn’t it great how car parking is often more subsidized than walking or biking? Our office is gradually going toward an evenhanded policy — no forms of commuting are subsidized more than others, which will be great when it finally happens.

Yeah it’s crazy. I think the IRS limits parking to $240/month but transit such as metro is around half of that! I don’t know if cycling even rates.
Have the bike here today though. Only a few hours until my last commute home for 2011.

ParticipantAm trending towards just over 4,000 miles for 2011 (including Bikeshare). Although, I had to take a guess at the first three months of the year before I started using RunMeter
.
Happy pedaling!

ParticipantThanks to my most wonderful riding partner and husband who enables my spandex and smart wool addiction (Greenbelt) I have recorded 1705 miles since July (when I started using mapmyride). I’m estimating about 2500 miles for the year. I started fair weather commuting in fall of 2010 about 2 days/week. Barring really lousy weather, I bike commute nearly every day now. We take weekend fun rides to Eastern market from Greenbelt, and for my birthday I was surprised with a bike trip to a downtown DC hotel. It was the coolest thing ever to pull up on bikes to a hotel valet! I plan to keep on pedaling into 2012!!

ParticipantI’m riding out to work tomorrow to pick up my computer and so that I can make that one last commute for the year. I do envy Dana that view in the pic. Nothing so scenic on my ride unless you count freight trains of heavily tagged boxcars. I also envy Greenbelt and any other riders their daily commutes thru the Capital grounds. That’s a fabulous place to ride across. See everyone next year.

ParticipantMy last commute for 2011 was 12/23. I rode to work 100% of the days I was in town and one of nine days I was out of town. This makes my fouth consecutive year with over 90% bike commutes and the third where I rode every day I was in town. My total commuting miles for 2011 were a couple miles under 6900. If I had only ridden the most direct and safe route I would have had about 2150 miles.

ParticipantToday was my first day back commuting in about almost 3 weeks. I caught a nasty head cold that transitioned into a sinus infection in the middle of December. Once I finally got by that it was the holidays and off of work. I did do a joyride this weekend up 4MR and then Custis for a bit with my girlfriend. I had never actually ridden up that way and once I got past the few miles, it was very pleasant.
Sadly today’s commute was pretty cold and I suspect tonight’s will be even colder. Worse yet, since nothing is open on the holidays, our building’s parking garage only opens with a passkey (I don’t have) and there was no guard on duty to open our service elevator to get down to parking garage. So I said screw it and took my bike through our building’s main lobby into the parking garage elevators. I thought about parking on the street, but with how desserted it is in town (why my employer has us working today when it’s a federal holiday is beyond me), I figured no sense taking chances. On the bright side, I did not pass a single cyclist nor was I passed by any cyclists on the MVT and there were only 4 joggers to deal with.

ParticipantJust did the mileage survey – about 95% on bike this past year working out to about 5,200 miles or so. This morning was frigid but welcome.

ParticipantNice year of riding y’all!!!! I really enjoyed seeing this community come together. One of the best thing about 2011 was getting to know such a great group of cyclists!
Looking forward to continuing this in 2012.
