My daughter has a birthday party to go to in Crystal City at 1030am this Saturday. I was thinking of biking. I’d probably go across the 14th St Bridge then take the MVT to where we had the Freezing Saddles happy hour, then take the streets for a few blocks.

I’ll be pulling a two-person Burley trailer. Is this completely insane on a Saturday morning when people are coming for the cherry blossoms and it’s supposed to be warmish and sunny?

My wife and I will each be out with a trailer along with half of the be-trailered in DC and probably every CaBi- it will be crowded and slow. As long as you aren’t in a hurry it’ll be fine.

I’ll also have my stink-eye ready for any pathlete who gets tense over their “training” on such a day

It’s been bad on weeknights so I would be afraid to venture a guess about this weekend there. Even the MVT last Saturday by OT was ridiculously crowded to the point where I would have turned around and said screw it because I hate going so slow I feel like I’m on a unicycle. So echoing GC above in if you’re willing to go slow, reallll slow, then you’ll be fine. Although don’t anticipate using the sidewalk area along Maine Ave/Ohio Drive as I gurantee it will be a bad mistake.

I know of a couple big Meetup bike groups that will be heading up the MVT tomorrow from 4MRT/WSM and crossing over the 14th St Bridge between 10 and noon. Their organizers are very aware of the expected crowded conditions and have so advised their members to take it easy.

Ok, thanks for the advice. Sounds totally doable. I won’t be in any big rush – just heading to a birthday party full of five-year-olds. A crowded MVT should actually be relaxing.

Modify your trailer with those sword things from Ben Hur and you’re good to go. :)

Made it out and back without much trouble. Had one cyclist pass like a jackass – no call, not enough room, and then he rode the tire of the guy in front of me until he could pass him, too. Getting from the 14th St Bridge back to the road was a little tough (Wow, tourists are unaware of their surroundings), but otherwise no trouble. The 15th St hill was tough with about 50 pounds dragging behind me, but I made it up.
