ParticipantPaving still has not started. The bottom layer of gravel is in place, it also looks as if the irrigation and wiring for light fixtures are in place. There was workers on site when I rode by around 11 am.

ParticipantNo changes to the trail as of Sunday evening. Still no paving on that last section of the trail.
But I did see the outdoor fitness stations along the completed part of the trail. Very cool. There are several of these stations between Potomac Ave. and Braddock Rd.
I saw the pull-up bar station for the first time. It includes three horizontal bars at different heights. I just hope it’s sturdy enough.

They also have sit-up benches, a heavy-duty wobble board, sloped parallel bars and more.

ParticipantI spoke to a gentleman from the paving company at the project site this morning. He told me that paving was going to be starting shortly (this was just before 10) and that the first coat of paving would be completed in time to open the path to the public this evening.
A final top coat will be applied in about a month.

This seems worthy of celebrating with a trip to Sugar Shack donuts.

I couldn’t find bike parking by sugar shack a few weeks ago when I was there…but I also didn’t look close. If there is bike parking there, you’ll be able to find me there most Saturday mornings

Streetview shows 2 hoop racks within 15 or 20 feet of the front door. I’m hoping they’re still there.

Good to know! I walked right by there and must have missed them. Maybe we should have a donuts and coffee club sometime there soon. It’s pretty amazing.

Tuesdays are still open.

Participant1) It sure looked like the asphalt was down on the trail when I went past this afternoon.
2) Sugar Shack does indeed have extremely convenient bike parking. And delicious Samoa Donuts.

Indeed the asphalt is down. However, the fence is still up at the Braddock Road end of the trail.

I was able to bike through this evening — the fencing had been moved to the side at both ends of the new section. (Woohoo!) However, there’s a trench at the north end where the newly paved section meets the existing trail, so use caution if you’re biking through there.

I passed through there last night and was happy to see that it is finally open. I do like the fact that the trail ends at a crosswalk, so if you are not headed toward the metro station, you can easily get onto Braddock Rd.
DEFINITELY be wary of that trench, though! It was not pleasant to hit with my road bike, but even at night it was still visible due to the street lights. Also, there was still an orange detour sign for the trail pointing people toward Monroe Ave. Hopefully they will remove that.
My only criticism about the trail in general: why does the trail zig-zag around the exercise stations? The trail shifts a few feet over, goes straight for about 15 feet, and then shifts back very awkwardly. I think curves should have been used, but I’m guessing this zig-zag made it easier to maintain a straight line for the trail.

ParticipantThe zig-zag has been there long before the stations were added. I think it’s because of the utility manhole/tunnel or something related to a utility line. But that’s just my guess.

ParticipantI thought the zig zags might be intended as traffic calming or speed limiting measures.
I also dislike that so many utility covers are set on the trail (see the bottom left of the photo below) instead of off to the side. Up towards Target one of them had a tire-swallowing gap between the asphalt & utility cover.
