L Street Cycletrack Survey

Portland State University is researching protected bicycle lanes in six cities across the country, including the L Street Cycletrack. I just took the survey — it says it takes 20 minutes, but I think I did it in around 10.

Theoretically, it works ok. Realistically, it could be much better. Thanks for the survey link.

This is how the L-Street bike lane worked for me during last Friday’s evening rush. I don’t typically ride it during the evening rush. It was pretty terrible.

Mostly, it needs to do a better job of preventing stupid from taking over our lane.

I hate the L St Cycletrack. I appreciate that they’re trying things beyond just the standard lane on the far right, but it’s time to admit that this isn’t working and do something different on L. It’s unsafe to ride in, and it makes it less safe to take the lane because now the cars expect you to be in the bike lane. I took the survey and tried to convey my feelings as accurately as possible.

I really like the idea of the cycle track, but if you’re not comfortable splitting lanes in rush hour traffic, this one is not for you. The shared turn lanes kind of force you to do that.

Thanks for the survey link. I liked that they listed a couple of scenarios that I have experienced while in the cycletrack like cars turning left from the right side because they didn’t get into the left turn lane.

If I had my way, all sections of the cycletrack that were bicycle-only would have green paint because the cycletrack is wide enough for cars to accidentally (sometimes purposely) enter it so it could clear some of the confusion.
