ParticipantDo you mean knickers, like loose “capri” type pants, or do you mean knickers like mid-calf length cycling tights? I assume you mean the former, but in case you’re interested in the latter, I have a couple pairs of Ibex wool cycling knickers that I absolutely love. Although they are essentially tights, they are much more “normal” looking than bike shorts or full-length tights…maybe that’s because they’re wool, but I think the length also adds to it. I like to wear them down to like the low 40s or so, but below that and I have to go with tights, which I’m not so much a fan of, but they work pretty well.
All that said, I think once my wife and I close on our house in Arlington and my commute gets cut in half, I may look into loose cycling pants for this winter, but for my current commute, tights are much more comfortable.

ParticipantGore bike wear makes some great cycling products like that, for example, the Alp-X active pants. I saw some Gore men’s knickers similar to those at Spokes, etc. in Alexandria a week or so ago.
I have a similar womens’ version of some Gore knickers (I don’t think they were as expensive as the Alp-X) that I really like. Very comfortable to wear on the bike, good deep pockets, reflective bits and suitable for walking into the office.
You might want to check http://www.goreapparel.com.

Participant+1 for Gore. I have a pair of padded winter bib pants that I wear on the coldest of rides.

ParticipantI didn’t even think of Gore, duh? I really am liking the 3/4 Fusion.

ParticipantI think that’s what I have. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to be making them for women anymore.

ParticipantI have two pairs of knickers by Pearl Izumi that I picked up at REI last fall. They fit as nicely as their PRO shorts. Mid-calf length. And except for the coldest weather work great into the 40’s for me. I covet the Ibex ones though…

I’ve got a few pairs of these that I use all the time. I wear my normal cycling shorts under them. They’re comfortable, durable as heck and are not entirely repulsive to look at.
I’ve got a pair of Zoic knickers that look nicer, but have not been as durable. Again, I wear roadie bib shorts under them to provide the padding.
Bicycle Times Magazine issue #18 had a great article on making your own knickers out of good quality thrift store dress pants. Page 72. Might find it on their web site or you can buy back issues electronically if you like. http://www.bicycletimesmag.com/

ParticipantSew the shorts onto your knickers/pants. Then you’re only washing one thing!
I have a few pairs of padded MTB shorts I use through the colder months. Already started them on rotation last week actually.
Though I’m fine with wearing cycling shorts underneath clothes. One more thing to wash is really nothing when you commute every day.

ParticipantI read about TwinSix knickers in Micycle Times Magazine too. They liked them a lot.

I will likely order a set of these in the near future.
