OK, disclaimer: I know no one here’s a doctor (right?). Not asking for medical advice! Just asking for previous experiences you may have had.

On Thursday’s ride to the happy hour, I felt a “twinge” in my IT (iliotibial) band at the back of the knee. About 10 pedal strokes later, I felt a pain in the front inside of the kneecap. It was a bit sore later, but I cycled 10 miles to the metro with no problem. I rested Friday and Saturday, then rode 27 miles on Sunday with no issue. It hurt a bit later. Last night and today, the IT band is stiff and hurts, I’m used to this. I have a foam roller exercise to stretch it, ice, and a prescription cream (diclofenac) anti-inflammatory to use on it. Unfortunately, I’m still feeling pain and a swelling type feeling in the kneecap. It’s a somewhat sharp pain at times.

I’d just go to the freakin doctor if I hadn’t just switched jobs this month. My new benefits suck and don’t kick in for “30 days after the 1st of the month after employment begins”….. wtf? yeah, Sept 1 is when it kicks in anyways. I have a doc I can see who will take a discount cash fee, but I don’t really see what he can do beside order an MRI or something, which I’d have to wait for the benefits to kick in to get anyway.

Has anyone had this type of pain in the past? What was your experience with it? How did you rehab it? Was cycling safe for you to do?

I was planning on riding a lot more with the new bike, and am all set to ride tomorrow. I’ll probably wait until the morning to make the ultimate decision, knowing I can drop to the Metro at many points in my ride if I need.

You’re not allowed to post such things during the mid-morning munchies!

When they called Eddy Merckx “The Cannibal”, I don’t think they meant it literally…

Just an update (for those interested). I really appreciate all the advice.

I rested until Saturday morning, then went with the Proteus group ride. It was a nice easy pace for 18 miles. My knee gave me very little trouble. I got home from that, choosing not to try the faster, longer ride that morning and decided I needed to ride more. I took a easy little 10 mile trip up to REI, where I found a Garmin 800 sensor package on sale! (couldn’t pass it up :( )

Sunday morning I took another 10 mile, somewhat off-road (on a road bike lol) trip around Bethesda. Again, the knee complained very little. Magically, this morning most of the pain is gone. I just have a bit of IT band pain, which is really typical for me. I continue icing and stretching, and I’m mostly convinced I didn’t actually rip or tear anything. I started to have some pain in the other knee late last week, very similar to the pain I was worried about. I realized that it had to be plain old arthritis pain, and not an “injury” of some sort. The other knee started to hurt because I was walking with more weight bearing on the good knee. I think the little twinge I felt in the kneed that day was my IT band not happy with the longer mileage of the day, and riding with my knees out a bit. I’m concentrating on keeping those things in (AERO!).

    getting old sucks.
