I like the idea of a Kidical Ride that ends at ice skating! Think of it as a winter themed parallel to the Sprayground ride from last year. Pentagon City rink?

Ooooh, good idea. Any recommendations for coffee shops in Pentagon City/Crystal City that we could start from?

Plans are shaping up! Looks like this Sunday, meet at 4pm at [a cafe] in Pentagon City, wander the streets for 3-ish miles, end at Pentagon Row for ice skating/early dinner.*

We need to find a place to meet, ultimately a place with hot beverages. I hear Paramount Cafe gets good reviews, but isn’t visible on Google street view (thanks Chris!). Anyone know it? Is it in a building? Open to the public? Worth trying to find? Otherwise, it looks like we’ll meet at a Starbucks.

*My family isn’t into skating, but we’ll probably head to one of the restaurants around the square/ice skating rink for dinner after the ride, if anyone wants to join us.

Pics on Foursquare. Doesn’t look like a lot of indoor seating

An excellent point. More pics on Facebook – looks like it probably seats 7 or 8 people tops. *sigh*

*sigh* indeed. Thanks for the help!

How about meeting at the Pentagon Row Starbucks, and taking this 3-mile route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6794277?

Might it be smarter to do that route in reverse? Then we’re only trying to do one zany left into traffic instead of 3? (or we could ride a block of sidewalk on Joyce and not do any zany lefts into traffic)

Oh, right. Of course. I’m losing my touch! The route is reversed (same link). It seems very close to be a drawing of … something. A unicorn? Any suggestions?

PS. Like the Tour of Protected Bike Lanes I snuck in there?

BTW, it’s official: post is up at kidicalmassarl.blogspot.com

That’s right, we’re doing a January ride in honor of ice, delayed openings and snow days! The forecast for Sunday looks acceptable (high of 50!), so we’re going to ride — meeting at 4pm at the Pentagon Row Starbucks. After a little time to grab a toasty beverage and chat, we’ll roll out (4:15pm) and around the awesomely flat neighborhood of Aurora Highlands, coming back to Pentagon Row in time for a little ice skating and/or an early dinner.

    Events at Pentagon Row
    When: Sunday, January 18, 2015 4pm (roll out 4:15pm)

Meet: Starbucks at Pentagon Row (probably inside)

Parking: Street parking (should be free on Sunday); surface lot at Pentagon Row (free for the first hour); garage under Pentagon Row (not free, but I believe Harris Teeter validates for an hour, if you need groceries)

End: Pentagon Row Ice Skating Rink (basically the same place as the start)

    Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6794277

We’ll roll out and (almost) immediately enjoy Arlington’s new protected bike lanes (on Hayes and Eads). Then we’ll turn into the neighborhood and enjoy the mostly flat neighborhood streets of Aurora Highlands, brushing by the very cool playgrounds and sprayground of Virginia Highlands Park (where we can dream of summer)…

After the ride, families are encouraged to enjoy ice skating at the rink, or to join together for dinner – there are plenty of options in Pentagon Row.

The ride itself will take place before sunset, but if you’re planning on riding home after, you’ll probably need lights. Given weather reports, we expect the road to be ice and snow free, but please keep an eye out and be sure to dress appropriately (we might need rain gear). This page will be updated in the case of inclement weather.

    Happy Winter!

We should go for a bike ride! I’m thinking Saturday sometime, but that’s as far as I’ve got. Ideas? Requests? I’d like to announce tomorrow (Tuesday)

Kidical Mass Arlington has two exciting things going on this week:

This Thursday night, 7-9:30, your friendly KM Arlington founder, Gillian, will be part of a panel for FAMILY BIKING 101, with BikeArlington and an instructor from WABA. All are welcome – Please come and pass this along to any friends who may be interested in biking with kids of any age. At Arlington Unitarian Church at George Mason and 50 http://kidicalmassarl.blogspot.com/2015/03/family-biking-101.html

And then, in honor of the luck of the Irish and the return of spring, Kidical Mass Arlington will ride on Saturday, March 21, 2015. We’ll meet at Penrose Park, ride around the beautiful neighborhoods of Penrose and Arlington Heights, and end up at The Celtic House. Those that want to can join us for lunch and a belated St Patrick’s Day celebration. The route is on the short side, and mostly flat to ease us all in to another beautiful Spring season of riding!

When: Saturday, March 21, 2015 11:00am (roll out 11:15am – come early with to play!)

Meet: Penrose Park — 6th Street South & South Wayne Street, Arlington

Parking: On the surrounding residential streets.

End: The Celtic House — South Barton Street and Columbia Pike. (about 4 blocks from the start)

    Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7221114

Remember to double check the weather — it shouldn’t be cold, but it might be cool. Especially the little ones not peddling might need extra bundling.

Hope to see you there! http://kidicalmassarl.blogspot.com/2015/03/kidically-irish.html

PS. I’d appreciate help spreading the word. E.g. if you are on a neighborhood listserve that would be interested, and have a second to copy-paste this into an email, that would be awesome! Especially if your name is Chris and you live in Penrose.

So, I’m planning the main season: http://kidicalmassarl.blogspot.com/2015/03/scheduling-scheduling-scheduling.html

Feel free to post ideas here.

    Quote:
And now for Kidical Mass Arlington’s schedule! We’re generally riding on the third weekend of the month, and will mix in both Saturdays and Sundays

    Here is the tentative schedule:

    Sunday, April 19
    Saturday, May 16
    Sunday, June 27*
    Saturday, July 18
    Sunday, August 23**
    Saturday, September 19
Sunday, October 17: Halloween ride (should we push this to the next weekend?)

If you have any ideas or requests for any of these rides – start/end location, neighborhood, even time of day or theme, just let me know (comments; kidicalmassarl AT gmail DOT com). If you’re interested in leading a ride, definitely email. You may have noticed that Gillian, who leads these rides, is increasingly pregnant. It would be VERY helpful to have a backup ride leader for the April 19 ride, and probably the May ride as well.

    * Note June is the 4th weekend of the month

** Note August is also the 4th weekend of the month
