ParticipantI’m already missing 8 miles of #withkid because I didn’t stop the Strava ride when they were no longer biking. Remains to be seen whether I bother to split the rides…
Also, excellent use of the hashtag leaderboard generator.

ParticipantSince I know folks have been dying with anticipation[/sarcasm], I thought I’d give a quick update on my thinking for how the combined prize will be scored. At least at this point (I’m sure things will change a bit come March) – I think using combined miles wouldn’t make a lot of sense given how much weight would go to the #kidical standings. There are 7 names on each leaderboard, 4 have points on each, so 10 total people represented. However, there are about 350 total #kidical miles and just under 40 #withkid miles at the moment, so total mileage would look pretty close to the #kidical table. Right now at least, I’m thinking of using the average of the share of total mileage from each leaderboard.
For an example of how that works as of this morning (all figures rounded to the nearest whole number):
- Jon would be in first place since he has 27% of the #kidical miles and 40% of the #withkid miles, for an average of 33%.
- I’m in second place with 56% of the #kidical miles and 0% of the #withkid miles, for an average of 28%.
- Shawn is in third place with 0% of the #kidical miles and 39% of the #withkid miles, for an average of 19%.
This approach still isn’t final, but it’ll probably be something very much like this unless there’s a dramatic shift in the numbers that would dictate some other approach being “fairer” (in my opinion as the prize-giver).

I’m just happy to be on a leaderboard!

ParticipantSince it’s been a few weeks, here’s an update on the kid-related scoring. One note: based on the picture/post here, I’m going to guess that Jonathan Levine’s #kidical miles really are #withkid miles based on the definitions used for this scoring (very impressive in either case). If anyone knows for sure, let me know and I can update (or not) the information below accordingly.
If that assumption is correct: we’re up to just over 600 #kidical miles and just under 300 #withkid miles. However, with me still around 56% of the total #kidical miles and Jonathan with two-thirds of the #withkid miles, the whole “average of the share of total mileage from each leaderboard” doesn’t really give folks proper credit for both kinds of riding to be a true combined prize. With that in mind, if instead I take a geometric mean of the mileage shares – that limits the standings to those who appear on both leaderboards.
If I do that, Jon’s in first place, Retro DIY’s in second, and Bryan Church is in third at the moment.
One other feature of using the geometric mean is that (for example, not that I’m going to give a prize to myself): I couldn’t just get 1 #withkid mile and ride on the coattails of my #kidical mileage; all else being equal, I would need 27 #withkid miles to take the lead in a combined standing calculated this way, so it rewards some balance between the two.

ParticipantYeah, all mine are #withkid. I’m a terrible rule follower. I’ll try to edit them.

No worries; I’m just glad folks are participating. Hopefully I can get at least one #withkid ride in the next few weeks myself

ParticipantAs of whatever’s posted at 9PM on March 9 – here’s the latest “combined” standings, using the “geometric mean of the mileage share of the #kidical and #withkid miles”.
- Jon at 19.6% (26.6% of the #kidical miles and 14.5% of the #withkid miles)
- me at 4.8% (60.2% of the #kidical miles and 0.4% of the #withkid miles)
- Barb S at 4.6% (1.4% of the #kidical miles and 15.2% of the #withkid miles)
Just two weekends left! (Or depending on perspective – still two weekends left!)

ParticipantYour 430 kid hauling miles are insane. I have fewer #kidical miles this year than past years for various reasons but I don’t think I ever got much higher than 300 or so, and I’ve been far and away the leader in this for a while now. It’s awesome to be getting my butt kicked this year.

Thanks! Her having Xmas money to spend and wanting to buy Legos has helped give us excuses to make the trek to Pentagon City a few times, which in turn is helping bump up our mileage quite a bit more than I expected this year. (I was just hoping to double what we did last year, largely by just doing both directions of the school commute.)
Counterpoint: I’m only hauling one kid so a lot of your miles are harder. Or at least heavier, kid-wise. And we get a lot of use out of the MBT (the part between Franklin and M is probably 70% of the daily school commute for us), which helps.

ParticipantSince we’re approaching the home stretch (just 4 more days after today), I thought I’d give a quick update on the combined standings, and a little bit of info about the prizes.
Standings: basically nothing has changed since last Friday. Fueled by the search for beer and with the support of his family, Jon’s increased his lead in the combined standings (i.e., the Kidsathlon), another Jon (Levine) still is far in front in the #withkid standings, and I’m still insane.
Prizes: All winners will receive a commemorative plaque-like thing, approximately 3 in. by 6 in. (flat – so easy to pack wherever). The winner of the #withkid standings also will receive a few small items – easily fit into a jersey pocket or bike bag.
The winner of the Kidsathlon should be prepared to bring home a 12 in. by 12 in. by 4 in. box. Weight’s about 5 lbs., so hardly noticeable if you’re hauling kids around. -
