I should probably post this in the Freezing saddles thread as most others have sufficient sense not to ride in sub freezing temps.

Remember that batteries rely on a chemical reaction to do their magic and the colder it gets the more inefficient that process becomes. I suspect that most people take their lights off their bikes if parked outdoors in public but where ever you park your bike don’t let the batteries freeze. You may find a much darker ride ahead of you than anticipated.

Word. Once it starts to gets in the 30s/low 40s, I take my lights off my bike and store them in the house overnight. I also make sure to have at least two front and rear “be seen” lights for redundancy and additional visibility if needed…I can probably get by if my main headlight died and I couldn’t see very well, but I’d be terrified to ride roads without a good blinkie.

I’m one step closer to rejoining you in the dynamo crowd, with the gift of a dynamo hub for Xmas. I still have to build up the wheel around it and purchase lights, but I’m getting there. The lack of need to think about batteries in a whole host of situations is probably the primary reason I miss my dynamo setup and want a new one. :)
