So why ARE bar-end shifters better/mechanically superior/more fixable than brifters?

    Me, I know nothing. :(

It’s a simple pully on a single axis, without the combination of multiple functions into a bunch of moving parts.

Mind you, I think fixies are hella cool looking and I want to try riding one as soon as possible, I just don’t think me and my jello legs could commute on one. Unless Arlington Ridge would like to obligingly sink into the earth. Oo, if it did that I could commute on that sugar skulls Electra Cruiser with the tassels on the handlebars that I secretly covet!

    Secretly. :D

I used to think I couldn’t commute fixed either, I was wrong. I think that’s a great goal to set for yourself.

I am not anti-fixie. I only suggest that one puts on at least a front brake if you are going to ride in urban areas.

Goal set! We were admiring some fixies at CityBikes today :)

Also, I have decided to call all passes even when walking ;)

Awesome, I wimped out and built up a 1×7 29er as my backup bike. What we need more of around here are belt-mounted air horns.

    Definitely need some panniers!

Rode up to the grocery store today to grab some milk and a few other things… 10+ pounds in a messenger bag is WEIRD to ride with!

I feel much more stable with the weight down on the bike – I used to bike the C&O and CCT with a few gallon jugs of water strapped to the rack to take out to water stops for runners and that was much less weird. :D
