ParticipantI stopped and helped another rider with a whisk broom this morning. Thanks dude, I’ll pack mine tomorrow.
I also stopped and talked to the maintenance guys who were doing trash run at gravelly point. They are aware of the issue. I’m going to ask them if the NPS can hide some full sized brooms around there so we can sweep up until they catch the misguided individual who is committing this crime.

I saw glass this morning at these same spots, but also NPS personnel walking on the MVT with a broom and other clean-up equipment. Unfortunately, they were walking away from where the glass was.
They were cleaning up glass on the airport north overpass at about 8a. I told them about the glass chunks at the south end and they said I was the third person to tell them so hopefully it’s cleaned up soon.
This seems to be a new spot for the glass breaker(s) since it’s always been on the two airport overpasses.June 5, 2017 at 1:01 pm #1071722anomad
ParticipantDid you stop and thank them and offer to show them where the other glass was?

ParticipantRegarding the glass, in addition to GWMP maintenance please call USPP: 703-285-1000 and make sure they know the time you pass through the area.
The better they can refine when new glass appears, the greater the chance of catching the aashole

ParticipantIf the glass is being swept into the grass isn’t that a problem for dogs, grass walkers/runners, and a potential issue when the lawn mowers go over it? I know I came very close to incurring a serious injury one time when a NPS lawnmower shot out a bolt at me. Also a potential issue for cars if the glass is being swept on to the roadway below as well.
I presume the criminal(s) is targeting the bridges since you can’t skirt the glass by heading into the grass.
Amazing how some people are jerks.

I’ve never seen NPS crews sweeping glass into the grass. They’ve always been very helpful–and using brooms and dustpans.

ParticipantI’ll be packing my whisk broom in the morning. Don’t be afraid to stop and kick glass off the bridges and use all the points of contact mentioned in the thread if you see glass in the morning. Hell, grab a branch off a tree obstructing the bike path and use that as a broom if you have 5 minutes to spare on the way in to work. I got the name of the maintenance supervisor from the guys I talked to at Gravelly Point this morning, but I will spare him from a personal email barrage. I did email him and CC’d the Park Superintendent to thank them for their awareness of the broken glass issue and their attention to the matter. Those guys are seriously under-staffed and we should go out of our way to support a National Park we use daily. They had not responded as of close of business today to my suggestion of stashing brooms around the bridges that we could all use to clean up until they catch the culprit.
Also, if anyone is using the connector bridge between Huntington Avenue/US 1 and the GWMP be on the lookout for small screws on the bike path. I haven’t decided if its just carelessness of the construction workers walking between the Hampton Inn and those new apartments they are building here (38.792845, -77.052359) or something aimed at puncturing bike tires?? Just keep a lookout in that area for little screws. I might stop and have a conversation with the construction supervisor if the problem continues. I’ve thrown a dozen or more of them off the path. There’s also been broken bottles along there, but I have attributed that to late night drunken Marylander SUV drivers heading back across the bridge, so far. My whisk broom has seen a lot of action on that bridge.

Does DC have a similar glass reporting set up? There’s been glass on G street in the de facto right side bike lane between 20th and 21st for a few weeks now. I’ve had to essentially run the red light there to get out in front of cars to skirt around it.
You should be able to report it to 311, either over the phone (I think as long as you’re physically in the District when you call) or through the app. Based on my (limited) experience, they are pretty responsive to requests made through the app.

ParticipantEither glass man took the night off or the parkies sent someone out early.

ParticipantGlass is back on the MVT. This time it’s covering the section of the trail right past the parking lot cross-over at Gravely Point on the port-o-potty side. I avoided it by taking the grass, but the person behind me decided that right then was a great time to pass me so he went right through the worst of it even though I’d alerted him to the glass ahead before he made his pass. Apparently, he also works with me because when I said hi to him at the work bike rack and commented on how the glass was back on the trail he was super awkward and wouldn’t say more than a word before running away (and I checked in a mirror, I’m not THAT scary looking this morning…)

ParticipantAlthough a bit worse for wear, the part of the MVT between the IOD and the Roosevelt Island parking lot was open about an hour and a half ago.

Maybe this glass is the work of the ‘artist’ recently known for paper mache and cigarette butt collages on MVT. Fits the location and frequency.

While the patch work seems to be pretty smooth, I was disappointed we didn’t get a full repave after all that detour time.

I would guess that is because they are planning on re-doing the whole corner later this year. See http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?11661-Upcoming-Custis-Detours-in-Rosslyn&p=156273#post156273

ParticipantForgot how “nice” it was to ride up from TRI and straight through the IOD without that detour…it’s the little things, I guess.
