No mice on the trail, but I saw a baby porcupine last week and moved a turtle off the path. Nature!

Live mice? I’ve seen the occasional roadkill mouse on the W&OD. I’ve also been nearly murdered by the odd bunny wabbit on the gravel path/horse trail west of Vienna.

ParticipantI’ve seen a lot of chipmunks lately scurrying around. They look a little like mice.

I was about to ask about that. Is there something going on with chipmunks this year?

There’s always something going on with chipmunks.

the one’s I’ve seen don’t scurry so much, on account of being dead.

I think the babies are emerging from the nests right about now.

ParticipantYesterday morning I was so excited to see an NPS maintenance crew at TR Island. I stopped and asked them if they were going to trip on the bridge to DC. They said yes. I reminded them that the worst part is around the curve, about 1/3 of the way across. They seemed to get it. YAY – no more getting slapped in the face by branches from TR Island…
Except, nope. No such luck. They didn’t touch the bad part on the bridge.

Passed by there last night (in a car). Fences are still up, so I would say it’s closed.

I saw construction equipment at the top of the trail as I rode west bound on the W&OD this morning.

ParticipantI’ve never ridden on the Holmes Run Trail. What is the best way to connect to it via the W&OD?

There isn’t a direct connection to the trail from the W&OD. In a post (since deleted) yesterday, I had noted that I was traveling westbound on the W&OD and had seen construction equipment on the Holmes Run Trail, that actually was the Four Mile Run Trail at Columbia Pike. The Holmes Run Trail runs from Columbia Pike at Lake Barcroft to Eisenhower Avenue by the Alexandria Animal Shelter. A portion of the trail from Columbia Pike to near Chambliss is in Fairfax County and the rest of the trail is in Alexandria.
Since the Fairfax portion of the trail is currently closed, you could take the following route. This route does involve some climbing.
1. While on the W&OD, head to South Walter Reed Drive.
2. Turn south onto South Walter Reed Drive. There is bike path on the west side of the road that you can pickup just past Arlington Mill Road. The pike path ends at King Street.
3. Cross King Street, The bike path ends here. The road becomes Beauregard Street.
4. Turn right onto East Campus Drive. This is the NVCC Alexandria campus
5. Turn left onto Dawes Avenue
6. Cross Seminary Avenue and continue on Dawes
7. Turn left onto North Stevens Street
8. Turn right onto North Chambliss Street
9. North Chambliss dead ends into a bike trail
10. Follow the bike trail to the bottom where you will pickup North Chambliss again.
11. Turn left onto the Holmes Run Trail and follow it to Eisenhower Avenue. (Note: there are two fair weather crossings on this stretch.)June 26, 2014 at 12:07 pm #1004796DismalScientist
ParticipantThis is the connection to the Northern part of the Holmes Run trail, which I understand is currently closed.
