I keep thinking about doing that to temporary road work signs that get put in bike lanes and sidewalks when the work is being done in the general vehicle lanes.

I have done that to the WMATA traffic cones (yeah, traffic cones are like Sisyphus’s stone for me) at the south side of the entrance to the Eads Street bus barn. They often find themselves up on the sidewalk.

On the mattress front, the path was mattress free this morning.

    Flash flood statement
national weather service baltimore md/washington dc

…a flash flood warning remains in effect until 1230 pm edt for
    north central prince georges county…

At 1014 am edt…emergency management reported flash flooding from
very heavy rain with multiple water rescues on going. This is a
    particularly dangerous situation.

Up to 4 inches of rain has been reported across portions of the
warned area. Additional rainfall amounts of up to 1 inch can be
    expected.

Locations in the warning include but are not limited to beltsville…
    Bladensburg…cheverly…college park…greenbelt…hyattsville…
    Kettering…landover…laurel…mitchellville…new carrollton…seat
    pleasant…byrd stadium and fedex field.

Most flash flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your
vehicle into areas where water covers the road. Floodwater usually is
deeper than it appears. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the road. Make the smart choice when
flooded roads are encountered…turn around…dont drown.

Severe erosion from yesterday’s (now monthly it seems) “10-year” flood on the NE Branch trail behind the College Park airport

In mid-afternoon today, a hole opened up in the East bound lane of the W&OD between the 6 and 6.5 mile markers. Some stuff was put over it to warn people but be very careful–it is a big hole. I reported it to the W&OD trail authority.

The trail’s now blocked off pretty well. No word yet on repairs. Trying to reach MNCPPC

Here’s the notice. NOTE — the more calls they get from commuters, maybe the quicker they’ll make repairs. We can’t afford to let them dawdle so much that the next “20 year storm” (which will probably happen later this month) washes the trail out completely.

Here’s the PR number, and I’ll try to provide more details as I get them.

Update: Temporary repairs made today. From MNCPPC to the WABA/Prince Geo’s bike advocacy group:

All: The trail is re-opening. We received approval from the Maryland Dept of Environment to complete emergency repairs along the streambank and made temporary repairs this afternoon. The trail may be subject to future closures when permanent repairs are made.
