It was a crazy morning…I rode my road bike today and was planning to ride up the Custis, which would’ve put me in the intersection right about the same time you mention. Instead, at the last minute I decided to take the CCT and got caught in the “rescue” activity, even though I’m pretty sure they were hauling a body out of the canal as I rode through. But maybe the person was just unconscious, but I don’t think so. Did you actually see the ambulance stop at the intersection? Maybe it was part of the emergency cavalcade heading to the canal?

The ambulance with light flashing stopped in the right hand lane at the intersection just past the crosswalk on the Key Bridge side of Lee Highway, and was there for about 15 minutes. Another AFD truck was there for about five mintues. I’m just a little too far away to see what was going, but I can see pedestrians and cyclists, and I couldn’t see anyone down on the sidewalk or street.

I came through earlier (~7:45) and the crossing light (for crossing Lynn) did work but it seemed to me like it delayed a bit before turning. But that might have been my imagination.

Looks like the answer may have been a cyclist running into the new bollard at the top of the MVT/Custis Trail bridge crossing the GW Parkway according to another thread.

I had ridden through about 20 minutes earlier and noticed that the pedestrian lights for crossing Lynn St are still not functioning properly – show a solid red hand all the time.

Sigh. Some drivers are probably thinking “look at all those cyclists running the red while I have to wait here to get to work”.

    Double sigh.

light seemed to work properly today at 730am but I approached with caution, as it seemed to be acting up yesterday morning.

I was one of the four or five folks attending to the injured cyclists. She crashed on the way down the hill. (I didn’t see it so I have no idea how it happened.) One of the other people helping her told me that she crashed where the bridge and trail meet on the Rosslyn side of the bridge. She stood up and fell over like a tree, apparently hitting her head. She was wearing her helmet. When I arrived she was sitting on the side of the trail with four cyclists attending to her. One of the attendants called the EMTS who parked up on Lynn.

At this point, she was talking, sipping water, but still stunned. As I went up the trail to slow the cyclists coming down the hill toward her, she stood up and looked fine. Then I heard one of the other cyclists say “grab her,” and I turned to see her fainting. They guided her gently down to the ground and we all told her to sit still.

After a few minutes the EMTs showed up and took her BP, pulse, talked to her and asked her if she wanted to go to the ER. She said no (at this point she was looking much better). The EMTs walked with her up to their vehicle to “fill out some paper work.” I think they were testing her condition. I watched her walk with them halfway up the hill and I left for work. She seemed okay at that point.

Thanks to the other cyclists who attended to her. You guys were superb. Thanks to the EMTs. And thanks to all the cyclists descending from Rosslyn who slowed their roll without complaint.

    Be careful out there.
