Fairfax, VA: The Fairfax County Parkway Trail has a lot of 2-3 foot spots (should call them pits) where there is sand/debris at least 1-2 inches deep spread out among most sections. I definitely had a few moments where I had a bit of sliding as my road bike’s rear wheel lost traction. Considering my MVT-snow-clearing gear (1 shovel, 2 push brooms, 1 ice scraper) hasn’t gotten much use recently (for obvious reasons), I am feeling compelled to do some trail clean-up in the next few weeks (likely on weekday evenings).

Pro-tip – You need to push the new water fountain’s button really firmly. Yes, when it’s 100 degrees out and the button is as hot as the burning fires of hell, you still need to push the button really hard and hold it for a really long time to get water out.

While getting towards the end of my ride today, I was stopping at each and every water fountain along the W&OD between Reston and Bluemont Park (Arlington), and I feel like I may have lost my left thumbprint Men In Black style (is this reference too old yet?). It got me thinking, perhaps when new water fountains are installed, the button to activate the water (especially if it’s metal) should face to the north so it’s not heating up in the sun (as long as you’re north of the Tropic of Cancer).
