Paint Branch Trail still taped off at the underpass this morning, but rideable if you just go under the tape (a bit muddy but not flooded). @PGParks could get that mud up with a shovel and 10 minutes of somebody’s time…

From looking at Google Maps’ Street View, here’s what the alternatives look like:
– the northern alternative is Greenbelt Rd – sidewalks narrow, not suitable
– the southern alternative is Paint Branch Pkwy – south side sidewalk is wider and has a barrier separating it from the road, seems feasible

I got this email from the Coalition:

The closure of The Capital Crescent Trail around the construction project at the former “Lot 31”, across the trail from the Honda dealership in Bethesda will end at the beginning of the week. The trail will be re-opened on Monday or Tuesday, June 29th or 30th. When the trail re-opens there will be construction fences along the west side of the trail near the car dealership fence, as there is still work to be done along that edge of the trail. But an open trail, even with fences along the edge, is certainly better than a closed section of trail. Please note that the crosswalk over Bethesda Avenue has been moved to the east, so trail users heading into Bethesda will make a right onto the sidewalk and go to the crosswalk a few feet down to the east. Also, users will notice that the reconstructed trail is four (4) feet wider than the rest of the trail. This should work better for everyone, as it is an area where a lot of traffic enters and exits the trail. The developer has expressed their appreciation for the patience shown by trail users in dealing with the inconvenience of the construction project.




The project also includes a feature that should be of interest to many trail users. There is now a bike drop-off on Woodmont Avenue, just south of Bethesda Avenue. It’s a semi-circle by a curved wall. You can pull your car in, unload your bikes and secure them to rails along the wall, then take your car across the street where you’ll see an entrance to the garage. When you exit the garage, by stairs or elevator, look for the Woodmont South exit. This will bring you out next to the bike drop-off. And, the drop-off is at the end of the pedestrian path that leads back to The Capital Crescent Trail (the present detour).

I was surprised to find the Wilson underpass on the WOD flooded this morning considering it hadn’t rained at all in Reston prior to my departure (though it was wet/sprinkling/showering from Vienna on east).

Was it still flooding from last night’s rain? It came down HARD in Alexandria and Arlington last night. Thanks to all the rain from the prior storms, my yard turned into a giant lake.

It also rained a good bit around 6:30 this morning in that area

A friend ust posted a photo of a tree down blocking the Custis. He did’t give a location, but it from the background may be near the ponds between Quincy and Lincoln streets?

Yes, that’s exactly where it is. Right at the bottom of the hill between the ponds and before the bench where the last tree fell over. You don’t see it until you round the bend, so take it easy.

The ArlCo trail truck pulled up just as I was leaving so I assumed they were on it. vvill posted a pic of guys with chainsaws a few minutes ago so it is probably already cleared.

Has anyone ridden the C&O canal recently, particularly the part from Georgetown to Chain Bridge? Give the amount of rain we’ve had over the past several weeks, I’ve avoided it for the muddy swamp I suspect it to be and have been taking alternate routes to work. However, I’d like to switch back to my C&O route, but don’t want to find that I’m up to my bottom bracket in muck.

I ran along the stretch from G-town to Fletcher’s on Tuesday. It wasn’t great (plenty of muddy spots) but it wasn’t entirely as bad as I was anticipating. For almost all of the mud sections there were narrow “desire paths” on either side where people/bikes had carved out a dry route. However, those side paths might now be pretty mucky as well given yesterday’s storms and the system that is currently approaching the region as I type this. I’d wait for the next two-day stretch with no rain (should that ever happen) and you’ll be good to go!
