I really don’t know about Kenmore and Shirlington, but the neighborhood streets that I’ve seen (Courthouse, Lyon Village, Cherrydale) have been good with small, avoidable patches of ice (don’t pick up too much speed on down hills).

The roads in and around Shirlington are all clear.

I am familiar with the proposed route across the Memorial bridge (southbound) and happy to Marshall. I will not use the 14th Street Bridge as I ride on a roadie with skinny tires and avoid ice like a plague.

Just to reiterate, if you are on a bike with slicks, you may wish to walk the 2 block part of the Washington Blvd/Route 27 sidepath that is icy.
The route to the north of Ft. Myer is ice-free, but longer (and hillier!).

It looks like the consensus is that the Memorial Bridge (downstream, South side) is the better choice to cross the Potomac as the 14th Bridge is still “icy and yucky”. So I propose that we ride from the Cabi station at Jefferson Memorial to the Memorial bridge and cross together. We then have 3 relatively ice free options from postings #30 (go climb a hill North to go South) and #35 (flat 4.9 or 6.4 miles). I can do any of them. But please sound off on your preference if you plan to join the convoy at 5:15pm.

    That’s why I suggested it. [/sarcasm]

For those of you who are familiar with my desire to find the flattest route, you’ll appreciate that I would still pick the on-road, ice-free, 1-mile-longer and 1-large-hill-more route over walking the few blocks of ice on the 27 trail. I’m very ice (and fall) adverse. That said, I could see making the other choice.

I don’t often cross the moat. I’ll be at the CaBi station and follow the party. A quick looks seems like it might be more than a 30 minute trip, are there CaBi stations along either route that I could top up my time at?

If it is a steep hill and you guys want me to keep up, you will need to be very patient.

Take the route through Crystal City and you have several CaBi stations to choose from.

The ice-free route is a block away from a CaBi station (at Courthouse and 27) — should be an easy detour to go down Courthouse Road to the station, then take Uhle Street back to 2nd St S.

It’s not that bad. Just long.

Thanks! I have no route preference and will happily follow along. I rode my MTB today so don’t drop me :)

So happy there will be a non-icy convoy! Count me in — I will meet you guys at 515 at the Jefferson Memorial CaBi station.

My preference would be the longer route (because POINTS!) but I am just happy to ride safely so I will defer to you all. I’m not a speedy rider, but sounds like I won’t be alone on the tortoise front today. So that’s cool. Thanks Boomer2U for marshalling us!

This will be a no drop convoy, unless we go climb the hill:-)

I will not be joining the CaBi Jefferson Convoy – will meet directly at the get together.

    Thanks!

Thanks lordofthemark for leading us in. Awesome was the convoy that did a Hains loop on the way home. Moonrise over the Washington Channel.
