I am 95% sure I remember the route after doing it a few times last year (and I’ll download the GPX just in case)…
I know the route and happy to help marshall the convoy from Jeff Memorial

Thanks for the offer to lead! I’m going to keep an eye out for a report on what the trail conditions look like. I ride a commuter bike that doesn’t have super knobby tires. I can handle a little ice, but if it’s too bad I might leave my bike at the office and use public transit to get there.

Based on this morning’s commute, I might recommend taking the CC connector to 18th St. to S. Eads to 4MR – MVT is still kinda nasty, but that may improve today with a little evapotranspiration.

I would recommend 14th St Bridge –> Humpback bridge tunnel (turn right by the seagull statue) –> Marina parking lot –> LBJ Memorial –> Boundary channel –> Long Bridge Drive –> 12th –> Eads
Slightly shorter would be Boundary Channel –> Connector Road –> R on Army-Navy Drive BUT I don’t know the state of Army Navy as it bends along beside 395.

I second this idea. this is how dasgeh and I convoyed last year and it should be fine. The area between the 14th street bridge – humpback – and LBJ memorial absolutely suck, but the rest isn’t bad. We could also cut over on the Pentagon South parking connector road and get on FERN then turn right on Army Navy. As a group we would be fine.

Based on what I experienced this morning, the trail on the 14th Street bridge is also still largely covered in rutted ice. I don’t think I’d have fared very well without studs.

Thanks for the update. I’ll feel like a slacker for not arriving by bike at the HH, but I think that doing a 16mi roundtrip ride on icy paths w/o studded tires sounds like a bad idea. Pre-HH sleaze ride it is!
To my peeps planning a convoy from the Jefferson Memorial – ride safe and I look forward to meeting you at HH!

ParticipantI just rode east on Four Mile Run from Shirlington to the MVT. As others mentioned earlier, FourMile Run trail is dry and clear up to the MVT. The MVT is still a complete mess with lots of ice.
Please be careful everyone! It’s easy to get to Shirlington using bus and metro and it’s better to be smart than to get hurt. I updated the first post in the happy hour thread to provide a little more info about buses from Pentagon metro station. You can always make up the mileage another time if you are concerned or don’t have the right equipment.

ParticipantI’ll be joining in on the Jefferson Memorial convoy. Can’t wait!

Participantthanks to credentialing issues in my place of business (and not wanting to be stinky all day), i was forced to take non-pedal-powered means of transport to work today. unfortunately I won’t be able to catch the convoy, but will ride over to Cap City once I get home otherwise. i know, boo, hiss…

ParticipantAny rationale for riding across Memorial Bridge and up to Rosslyn, then down through Arlington streets, to avoid MVT?

ParticipantI plan to join the 1715 convoy from Jefferson Memorial, on a CaBi.

I think you’d be better off walking the section between Memorial Bridge and Boundary Channel than going up to Rosslyn.

I wouldn’t go up to Rosslyn, but I believe this route will get you Lincoln Memorial – Shirlington with little to no ice. Memorial Bridge is great, reports have said that Fort Myer is, as expected, great, and based on my experience on other Arlington Roads, I would expect 2nd St S and Walter Reed to be fine. I really don’t know about Kenmore and Shirlington, but the neighborhood streets that I’ve seen (Courthouse, Lyon Village, Cherrydale) have been good with small, avoidable patches of ice (don’t pick up too much speed on down hills).
At 5.8 miles, possibly the shortest route (though you go up on Fort Myer just to come back down on Kenmore/Shirlington).
EDIT: I changed the route linked to above, but just to be clear, when crossing the Memorial Bridge, I highly recommend always taking the DOWNSTREAM side, which means crossing to the south (Independence Ave) side of the Lincoln Memorial, then heading to the bridge.
