The bike lanes on Fairfax Drive westbound are 99% clear.
The bike lanes on Fairfax Drive EASTbound are about 65% clear.I got beeped and yelled at (over loudspeaker) by some sort of law enforcement personnel (black unmarked SUV, shoulder patches did not look like ACPD) on Fairfax on my way home yesterday evening for not being in the bike lane (that had cars parked in it, BTW). I only got a partial license plate as he sped away so I can not report him to whatever agency he works for. 😡
Really despise people who do that. My standard response to them all is my middle finger, but I’ve been wearing lobster gloves lately and last time I tried it, it was pretty much just a wave.

ParticipantThe Whitehurst is back to just its usual unpleasantness. Snow is cleared off the shoulder (except for about 8 inches against the side barrier where you don’t ride anyway).

KeymasterMVT (from 4MR to TRI) still half clear, half a trials course of frozen rutty stretches of ice and snow. Passable, but man what a white-knuckle workout just to stay upright.
4MR trail from Shirlington to MVT 95% clear. Diciest spot is bridge over Long Branch where constructions remains. Even so, tis a dream compared to MVT.
Thank you again Arlington Parks and County Board for approving and funding this program.

How’s the Memorial Bridge? I didn’t love the Custis-Key Bridge commute this morning, and may go back to my roads to the Iwo Jima – 11 trail – Memorial Bridge route.
Answered my own question: Memorial Bridge is completely clear. As is the entire connection between Marshall Drive and the Bridge (including the 110 Trail). Yay.

I tried a different route home (well gym). Joyce to Columbia Pike to Washington Blvd Trail East (the one along the Pentagon) to 110 trail through the park with Iwo Jima to Lynn to Custis to Quincy.
I would recommend roads after the 110 Trail. Specifically, Marshall – Meade – 50 service road – Rhodes – 14th/15th/Veitch (same road, changes names) – Wilson – Fairfax.

ParticipantWarning, the snow stuck in some places, like where it didn’t fully melt or last to melt. In the former case, it was such a nice blanketing that one does not notice just how rutted the hardpack is underneath (crap, turn left, right, better over there, stay upriiiiight, made it past).

WBTE and WBTW better? Or are you thinking something like Washington-Towers and Washington-Parkway or wholly new names like George and Martha?

Is the ramp and zig zag maintained by Arlington? I seem to recall that the official county line in this area is funky and Alexandria crosses the river slightly here.
The map on Call.Click.Connect. clearly shows the switchback ramp being in Alexandria (and allows service requests there) but I don’t know that means Alexandria built or, more importantly, maintains it. Certainly it has been my impression that ArlCo maintains the 4MR trail at the bottom of it. It seems to me that ramp would be tough to treat and you might be better off using the 4MR connection at Route 1.

ParticipantMVT between 4MR and the 14th Street bridge is mostly clear except on the bridges by DCA. The snow is still 6 inches deep and fluffy. It’s never going away!

ParticipantI decided to scout the Roosevelt Bridge this morning. Good news and bad news.
The good news is that the bridge itself is pretty much clear. The bad news is that the Virginia-side approach is problematic.
Since it stayed above freezing and was cloudy last night, things did not refreeze. From the start of the Trollheim up the hill to the bridge and for most of the curve it’s a messy, chunky slush. With MTB tires or studs you can probably slog through it. My 28s did not have enough grip, so I had to walk it up the incline. This continues along the curve. If it was going to be like this all the way across the river, it would be a long, sad trek.
At about the VA/DC border I decided to turn back and turned my bike around. Then I had second thoughts and turned it back around. I’m glad I did, because it was only another 40 yards and the sidepath cleared up. I then rode all the way across on clear concrete. The Kennedy Center left us this little gift right at the end.

ParticipantI did the Arlington loop today. Everything was clear along the Custis, W&OD, and Four Mile Run. Mt Vernon was clear except on the two bridges by National Airport and the two bridges by Roosevelt Island. Maybe the mild temperature and rain will wash the remainder before the artic chill. Great job everyone clearing the trail earlier!
