From the MVT South facebook page:
“The trail was in very slick shape this evening, as the temps hovered around 32 with freezing rain. With forecast temps of 28 at 7:00am tomorrow, I predict it will NOT be passable, unless you have studded tires.”My driveway and front porch near the Tulane exit off the GWMP is already a sheet of ice, so I’d trust Adam’s prediction.
Could someone go out to the real shady spots between the marina and the airport tomorrow morning between 530 and 6 and let me know if I should ride regular tires, studs, or fat bike?

ParticipantBlack Ice Alert: WOD at mile 6.0 Shelter by the Masonic Lodge and mile 7.5 at Poplar Heights tennis courts. I went down on both spots on my commute home tonight. You can ride the gravel service road/trail instead and get much better traction (says he in hindsight). Stay upright on tomorrow morning’s commute!

Only one thing for it:

ParticipantI slipped and fell an hour ago at my doorstep as a pedestrian, despite having a thermometer 6 feet away that says 34 F.

ParticipantMy tire chains made the bike slow and noisy. But they were so effective I wasn’t even sure there was ice until I got off the bike.
Only bad part was the driver who told me I should stop at the fire station and have them give me a ride home, then called me stupid (twice) when I declined. Ironically, she did NOT have chains. If it was that treacherous, why was she driving?

Ha! For the Sake of @dkel’s Organ!! That is exactly where I wiped out on tonight’s commute. Too bad that dude from #BAFS2015 wasn’t out there pre-treating the WOD for me tonight!!!

ParticipantIt’s slick as balls outside my place near Huntington metro. Just went out and checked. Ride studs if you’ve got any. I’m taking the train…

ParticipantCustis report:
Watch it on the overpass at Glebe. Other than that, no issues.
Will likely be clear there, too, in an hour.Sent from my LGMP260 using Tapatalk

Took a spill right here this morning, but miraculously landed on my feet. Rear derailleur’s not so happy though.

There’s a black ice patch going downhill (if you’re going east) just before the Glebe overpass, right after I got on from George Mason. Took a nice body slide down the rest of the hill into the snow. All overpasses and concrete surfaces on the Custis were frozen, especially the ramp near TR Island. If you have to ride in this morning, avoid the trails.

By 8AM this morning, most of the ice had cleared. There were still a few slick spots besides the usual “bridges freeze before roadway” spots, most treacherously the zig-zag at R street (a CaBi rider ahead of me went down in the turn, but was OK). Did make me glad to have changed to the wider tires for today, but things should be cleared up by midday.

ParticipantBoth approaches to the WOD underpass for Carlin Springs were almost completely covered by ice. I was happy to be riding studs. The people I saw on slicks and e-bikes going down in turns on 4MR and the MVT didn’t seem to be as happy.

ParticipantCrossing the Taft Bridge encased in a blanket of fog this morning was positively surreal.

Well, the air was 34, but the ground had been well below freezing for a week. I took a long walk last night on my shoe studs, was pretty sure schools wouldn’t open on time. Side note: studded shoes are as much fun as studded tires!
