ParticipantMt. Vernon Trail is almost entirely clear from 14th St. Bridge to Crystal City. Some small patches of snow in shaded areas and on the airport bridges.
Four Mile Run is almost entirely clear from Eads to to the WOD. Small patches of snow on the bridge.
WOD is clear from Mile 0 to Columbia Pike.
LBJ Memorial Grove is almost entirely clear. Some small patches of snow and ice.
Route 27 Trail is clear from Columbia Pike to the ramp to 110. It is heavily salted.
The roads in Arlington are heavily salted. Please be mindful that this makes it difficult to see potholes and cracks.
Everyone have a safe ride out there tomorrow!

How are the trails right now, given the snow and cold temps? I’m thinking I may just mount my studded tires for this week’s commutes and not worry about it, but if there’s no ice around, maybe I won’t bother.
From what I saw on the Virginia side around Arlington today, I wouldn’t bother, unless you like the clinky sound of studs on asphalt.

ParticipantAnyone ride the CCT?

ParticipantWOD from 6.0-8.5 was fine on 40s. No need at all for studs. Traction was fine on both the pavement and the gravel (better on the gravel). A few spots of ice, especially in the shady area by the tennis courts just east of Shreve, but nothing that was a big deal.

Stolen from Huskerdont’s Strava:
it’s pretty good. The overpasses have some crunchy ice, but no black ice so far. Spout run especially covered.

ParticipantCustis to MVT to LBJ Grove, then Pentagon roads:
All pretty clear. Small patches or snow/ice at edges of trail occasionally, which are easy to avoid, bridges/overpass worst. Spout Run and Trollheim definitely worst, but all very passable. Passing other people less pleasant on Spout Run, but a center-of-lane path on both. As the dawn’s early light lit the split on Trollheim, the gray paint looked a lot like snow/ice, but clearly wasn’t when I got there.January 2, 2018 at 2:29 pm #1080274hozn
ParticipantW&OD from Arlington out to Reston is quite clear, some sections of patchy snow over, but would be rideable on slicks for sure. I have studded tires on, which was not necessary, but I will probably leave them on for a couple days in case the expected melting tomorrow of the few sections that still do have a bit of snow makes for some slick spots.
Tomorrow morning I am going mountain biking instead. Great weather (frozen ground) for that!

ParticipantThe CCT is completely clear from G-Town to Fletcher’s, and the C&O is clear from Fletcher’s to Chain Bridge, and the Chain Bridge sidewalk is also clear. Surprisingly, even the ramps up to Chain Bridge were clear.

Thief!
I would add that the sublimation of the ice overnight was amazing. The Spout Run overpass was almost clear.

ParticipantMVT airport overpasses have some ice on them, but they are still very passable on a road bike. The wooden bridge by the marina north of Old Town is surprisingly clear of ice. South of Old Town on the MVT there are a few patches of ice in unexpected areas (aka not the typical low lying spots where water usually puddles) so be careful if you go out that way. It’s 99% clear of ice though from Old Town to Tulane though, so it’s an easy ride. The long wooden bridge over Dyke Marsh has a few patches of ice, but luckily not on parts of the bridge where it curves.

ParticipantThe crushed stone stretches of the Nidda Route between Ginnheim and Bad Vilbel have lots of standing water and puddles, but at least it’s not ICE because it’s 45°F here instead of in the teens! :p If it makes you feel any better, we did have a little ice in the form of a short hailstorm while I was riding midday.

ParticipantMVT about a third clear (thanks wind) from the Crystal City Connector to the 14th St Bridge. Remainder had less than an inch of snow with no ice. I was on 35 mm Schwalbe Marathons (no studs) and had no trouble. Wind is ripping down the channel so bundle up.

Thanks for the report. I rode the bus in today because I was unsure of whether I’d actually be able to see where the trail is. Now I regret my decision.
