I finally got around to getting a new front light. I’ve been wanting one of these for a while, as I’d heard that the beam pattern was much better than the round flashlight-style of my current (and most) lights. It’s true–even though it’s relatively low-powered by current standards, it illuminates the actual road better than any light I’ve had before. The road is evenly lit from foreground to distance, rather than having a bright foreground washing out the road further away. Other thoughts: it’s big. It takes 4 AA batteries. Some see that as a disadvantage, I find it vastly better than proprietary li-ion packs which either cost a fortune to replace or turn the light into a disposable item. The runtime is about 5 hours on the 4 AAs, and on a long trip you can just toss some extras into the bag (or even pick up regular batteries at a store). The water sealing seems weak. We’ll see how it goes. I definitely would not mount it over the tire without fenders. I still ride with the L&M vis 360, as backup and to provide extra pointable light (e.g., when watching for deer in the trees). But for street riding the Ixon is great by itself.
