    There are two approaches.

    When coming from the west,

turn left at Eads (between the wastewater plant and the power substation) and ride up Eads to 18th Street (where the Crystal City Metro station is). Turn right on 18th and then left on Crystal Drive. Just after the left on Crystal Drive, take the Crystal City cutoff on the south side of the water park, through the tunnel under the RR tracks and then connect with the MVT.

continue past Eads and take the ramp (where the trail has the switchback) up to Route 1. Turn left on the sidewalk along route 1 and then right on Glebe across Route 1 to Crystal Drive/Potomac Ave (last road). Turn left and take Potomac/Crystal up to the waterpark just north of 18th.

I prefer the 18th street route because Route 1 is elevated there and you can use the underpass.

    Thanks for the suggested detours.

Just wanted to reiterate that this contractor is building a cheap and temporary connection. Arlington will be coming back in a couple of years to build a permanent and likely much better connection.

Did they add a set of metal gates near the cement section just prior to the end of the trail on the W&OD side or did I just notice them today?

Now those of us in South Arlington can have our own ssss turn of doom, possibly with more turns.

Four Mile Run: Now with more DOOM. Has a nice ring to it.

I think the doom on Custis’ s-turn is mostly because of the tree coverage, so maybe this will work out better.

I counted the hairpin turns in the dirtwork tonight. Looks like four turns.

Twice as much doom as the Custis.

One year they “refinished” the S Turn of doom on the Custis. Whatever they put down on the pavement was slick as hell. Probably something water repellent which they thought would help maintain the assfault. The S Turn of Doom turned into a slippery slide.

From this evening. Work continues. Now with double the doom! The vertical strip on the side might be a stairway, or the fast way down!

I hope they put up low walls though to stop erosion (but low enough so we can see people coming down the hill).

Are we going to insist they name this Lombard Street East” and put up an appropriate sign? Also a 5 mph speed sign and lots of flowers.

Can they please just stop right there and leave it? That looks like so much fun…

The fence at the bottom would be a sure stop!

If it is wonderful (in whatever final form it appears), Arlington can claim it as ours. If not, we will highlight the doom actually is in North Alexandria (an artifact of the old course of FMR).

ps – This would be a good one for Jeremy Cannon to bag the first KOM for the hill.

This is in theory supposed to include a bicycle stairway.
