One more reason to ride a fixie….but seriously, your question actually got me to go look at my geared bike. I think the barrel adjuster on the dura ace is removable—the bigger question is where are you going to find just a barrel adjuster to replace the broken one. The other question being how you safely remove the bits still in there…
Honestly, I’d probably just start buttering up St. Nick and save this project for my spare time.
    Good luck.

Thanks 1/8th! Actually, my three season commuter is a single speed, which I love for various reasons (one being it’s fun to ride and less breakable, I mean less moving parts). I switch over to my geared Surly with studded tires in the winter, and I was getting her ready when I noticed this.

I think I’ll take it over to Spokes this weekend to see what they have to say. I’m sure St. Nick will not be happy with me for my late and pricey additions ; )

I can’t tell from the picture if you’ve broken it off, or just screwed it out. In either event, it’s not terribly hard to replace. If it’s broken, just find a small enough screwdriver to wedge into the interior of the broken bit and screw it out. Spokes or Conte’s should have a replacement in stock. Pretty straightforward.

Looks to me like you just screwed it out.

Thanks everyone. I took it to Spokes in Vienna over the weekend and they said that it was broken. However, they had a replacement in stock so they got me straightened out.

However, I’m still eyeing the SRAM Apex group for this commuter/touring bike.

Cool. I’ve been contemplating switching the cargo bike over to Apex. I kinda like the way it looks and that I can use drop-bar levers with it.

Glad they got it working for you.
