I went out to Kona to watch a friend race. What an amazing event. The fastest male pro rode 112 miles in 4:20, or almost 26 mph. And that’s without drafting on a hilly course in brutal winds (worst in 15 years) under the tropical sun. And then he ran a 2:54 marathon. Unfortunately, the older athletes had a rough time, and none of the four who were 80+ years old made the bike cutoff.

Yeah, I saw online that Sister Madonna Buder missed the time cutoff on the bike. She still managed to swim 2.4 miles and ride at least 74.5 miles on the bike in the hot and windy Hawaii weather. Very impressive, especially when she’s an 84-yr-old nun.

Mirinda Carfrae’s run was incredible and historic. She’s a good but not great swimmer, so she was behind the other top pro women. On the bike, her smaller body size means that she has a much tougher time in the very strong crosswinds. She finished the bike 14 1/2 minutes behind the leader. Then it happened. Her relentless run. She made up a little ground in the first half of the marathon, but she was still several minutes back at the halfway point of the marathon run. She started making up 30 seconds a mile. She caught up to one woman, then another, and another. She was hoping just to get into the top 5, as the defending champion. But once she got into the top 3 and she saw the leader, she kept on motoring. She ran down newcomer Daniela Ryf and ended up winning by 2 minutes.

I think the entire race is available on demand, for free, at the Livestream website. You can fast-forward or rewind to any point in each of the multi-hour videos. It’s really cool that they have this available now. (The NBC broadcast and the DVD only show about 20-30 minutes of race footage, and that’s mostly in slow-motion. The rest of the NBC program is devoted to personal stories of the competitors.)
