^^Sadly, this is pretty much how we would design a NEW intersection in the US if bike infrastructure were included.

So should we change our design?

Since Halloween is almost here, let me scare everyone on the forum with the dangerous intersection in the Netherlands (found out about this on BikeSnobNYC):

    The horror!

I’d like to compare this with Steve O’s video of the Intersection of Doom and take a poll of which intersection seems more dangerous.

Almost everone approaches that intersection with a relative degree of caution. The exception being some cars that drive on through (although not all that fast). Seems replacing with a 1-lane roundabout shared by all might be a workable solution.

So Arlco just put out this tweet

Help us improve Arlington. Report an issue and watch it get fixed via our website/app: https://topics.arlingtonva.us/reportproblem/ .

Can YOU think of any issues that you would like to watch get fixed???

    Seriously, lets overwhelm the website.

Oh never mind, you cant report things like this.

What the Intersection of Doom used to look like

Circa 1958. West of IoD is a Hot Shoppes. Look at that barge in the river ~ looks like a fuel barge. And you can see buildings on the private property at IoD. And of course no 66.

There’s also no path or sidewalk to get past the traffic oval at the foot of Key.

Unless those are crosswalks going near the center of the oval.

I think those are crosswalks, and all the white lines are sidewalks. I think you can even see pedestrians, though that might be dust spots. There also seems to be a crosswalk on the lower right triangle to get to the bridge, and a desire/suicide path on the lower left triangle. There’s nothing right at the bridge, but also no reason to walk over there.

Worth noting how different waterfront construction was back in the day. I see zero erosion control to go with the clearcutting. The barge might be construction-related (e.g., gravel).

Here’s a link to a pic from the 30’s, from Rosslyn, looking north over the Key Bridge and aqueduct.
