ParticipantMine came over the weekend and look quite nice, but I haven’t put them on yet and am expecting issues given the comments I’ve read. Normally I do like the try stuff like this out in a LBS instead of buying online; I suppose I should have gone that route, but I thought Knog would know what they were doing since I have a lock of theirs that’s pretty good. Established company and whatnot, but using Kickstarter might have been a clue.

Participant+1 on the Spurcycle. Solidly built, easy to install, fun to ring. Does not “jiggle.”

ParticipantMy Spurcycle is nice, but I would probably get one of the Crane E-ne bells for the next one. http://store.somafab.com/crebecofi.html

I got mine too. Raymo nailed all the faults of the bell. I think it’s awful. Mine rings quietly with a secondary dull thud because the hammer vibrates and strikes more than once. It rings itself when the road is rough because the mount contacts are so loose. The plastic feels chintzy (for $30 I was expecting an aluminum mount or something) but it’s also so thick I can’t fit it close to my shifters, so it’s out of reach without moving hands from normal riding position… yuck. Gonna see if I can’t return it and get some money back.
I took mine out for a two hour spin tonight. The bell does seem quiet compared to other bells. None of the joggers that I passed gave the jogger “I’m acknowledging your pass” signal so I’m unsure if they heard it over their headphones. It frequently made a very very gentle tinkling sound, which is appropriate for Christmas, I guess. The mount won’t fit over bar tape (although I didn’t try too hard to force it or try to find a longer screw) which is problematic for my road bikes since there’s not much unwrapped space and it was hard to place the bell where it wouldn’t contact the cabling. I have doubts that the bell will work if there’s a light fog out.
On the plus side, I like how it looks.
I’m going to test it out for a bit. What I’d really like is some sort of bicycle bullhorn system with a recording of me saying, “Passing on your left.” Maybe I should do a kickstarter.

Yes, please.

And it should use Bluetooth or something to override whatever the phone is playing on the headphones.

ParticipantIf you are getting a dampened ring from the bell, make sure it isn’t touching a brake/shift cable. When I installed the one on the nice bike, it didn’t ring very well at first because it was touching a cable, but then I slid it inward a bit and it rings fine. Since this bike never had a bell before, this works well for me, but that does seem to be a bit of a flaw in the design in that the whole outer mechanism is the ringer and that can’t touch anything but will typically be installed where it is likely to.
For the other bell I decided to put it on the rain bike rather than the CX bike. That bike has a narrower bar though so I had to install it over the bar tape. It also rings nicely, but I’ll have to see how it does in the rain. The Incredibell didn’t work in the rain, so if this doesn’t, it’s no different except for the expenditure.

ParticipantIf you want your bell to work in the rain, you will need one like this. Because physics.

But the rules of science no longer apply, it’s all skience now, so all I have to do is believe. Or so is my understanding of our brave new world.

ParticipantSeveral folks have posted about cables rubbing against the bell; that cut out space in the mount is meant for cables to fit under:

Somehow missed this post. Comments where? I didn’t see that noted here.
Good pic of how the slots are used. I saw them but couldn’t get them lined up right on mine, but then, my allergies were being disgusting and that’s no time to do any bike maintenance whatsoever lest I end up picking up the bike and throwing it into the wall. I may retry, but where I have it now seems good too.

ParticipantAfter yet another Incredibell failure (the striker keeps breaking on the ones I’ve gone through), I decided to treat myself and get a Splurgecycle…I mean Spurcycle. The bell reverberates for quite a long time!
