Its a lot easier to create segment where there is a recent ride I know of, and don’t have to scroll and scroll looking for ones to edit. I have done all the riding I need for the NoVa segments. I may not have time to ride the entire lenghts of the L and M street PBLs though (there are segments on them already, but not as long as I want) by NYE. If anyone can either ride them soon, or if they have rides already done and can post links to the rides here, I would appreciate it.

https://www.strava.com/activities/1008224190 should have the full L Street cycletrack between 25th and 12th NW (it doesn’t have the unprotected sharrowed part to 11th).

For reasons that are not clear to me, I cannot create a segment from someone else’s ride. (plus I forgot to mention that I still need to create segments on the Capitol Hill contraflow lanes. I intend to ride the segments tomorrow as part of my first FS ride, and will then create them. I will shortly be posting a list of the segments here for would be competitors to have before FS starts, including those segments that have not yet been created (IE the 4 segments in DC – all the NoVa segments HAVE been created). I will later post something with the actual exact segment names for the coders to use in determining the winner.

My proposal is that the winner will be determined by the person who has the most rides on their least ridden segment (IE if they ride one segment 2X, and all others 5x, their score would = 2) in order to encourage exploring, not riding back and forth on a couple of segments. The winner will get either a copy of Goethe’s Faust, or a copy of Le Carre’s “Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy”. I would also like to be able to somehow honor everyone with a score of at least “one” – IE everyone who has ridden every segment at least once.

Well, sorry I couldn’t make it to happy hour, thanks to W&W for organizing and to Accordioneur for announcing prizes. Congratulations to Komorebi for winning the prize, though even she did not ride all the segments listed. And thanks to Hans for last minute back and forth on coding.

As Reji said this morning, we can consider this a pilot. Now that all the segments are created, and I have a spreadsheet with a complete list, we can get this started earlier next year, and I can focus more on encouragement. I may also remove some of the segments, as it seems to me there were too many (though if we get a great new controversial segment – I am looking at you, 6th Street NW – I would still add a new one)

Komorebi, I will be taking the prize (a copy of the Honorable Schoolboy, by John Le Carre, which features the phrase the prize is named for) to the next few coffee clubs, so hope to see you there!

Thanks, lordofthemark! I didn’t think I was in contention for this prize, because I knew I hadn’t ridden all of the segments, so I was completely surprised when Accordioneur called my name last night. I’m going to make a point of going out and riding all of the segments that I missed.

I should be at HDCC and WTFCC this week, so hopefully I can pick up the prize from you there. Thanks for continuing to fight the good fight with BPAC, even when that means missing out on happy hour!

Well, to relieve your sense of heat and humidity, time for a FS 2019 discussion.

But this will not be as light hearted as many.

I have been reflecting on this the last couple of weeks. The In The Begining was the Deed prize was created to encourage the usage of seg bike infra in the region – partly to encourage people to explore and check it out, but also to get more people using it in order to respond to complaints that “we built a bike lane and no one used it”.

A few weeks ago Jeffrey Long was killed riding in the M Street bike lane.

Now I don’t think the people (whom I admire) who are taking DDOT to task on the safety issues on M Street, and pushing for improvements, want to remove the bike lane, or discourage people from riding it. They (and I) continue to lobby for new seg infra. Nonetheless, I do not feel comfortable having this bike lane as part of a light hearted competition. And reflecting further, I do not feel comfortable encouraging people to ride in bike lanes I am not super familiar with, and do not know all the safety issues.

My intention at this point is to do this side bet again, but this time to confine it to bike lanes in the City of Alexandria only. Those are lanes which, while not perfect, I personally ride fairly often and I know the safety concerns and on which I put my body where advocacy is. Also it seems to me that the “lets not build a new bike lane, that old one is never used” is a major NIMBY argument only, or mostly in Alexandria – certainly DC has some very heavily used PBLs (notably 15th Street) and I don’t hear it much relative to Arlington (I never got good suggestions for any of the other jurisdictions). Even for Alexandria, I will likely drop the downhill side of the unbuffered King Street lane (SB from Janneys) though I may add the new lane on Pickett, but only after riding it a few more times to be sure.

I think the bike lanes on Pickett should make your list, but I would also suggest you add Mill Race Lane to your list of bike lanes. It most certainly is a safe street for all riders. It connects to Eisenhower Avenue and is two blocks from the newly installed bike lanes on Jamieson.
