I don’t know the area at all, but I would suggest putting a rag or two under the battery. Bucket bottoms are very tough, but a couple of bounces from a battery could punch a hole through. I’ve had more than one seriously tough buckets die that way.

Sorry that I couldn’t be of more help. Rock on!!!

There’s an Advance Auto Parts in Greenway center. Best access is from Hanover Parkway, which has reasonable speeds and room for bikes in the lanes. The Spellman Overpass connects Hanover Parkway to Old Greenbelt, which is bike friendly, for passage toward Greenbelt Metro area and College Park. There are bike racks at the Ross a couple of shops down from Advance.

    Here’s Google link of area

They don’t even mind me dragging my bike in. I’m pondering my options, since the battery I’m looking at is a bit overweight for my rack (though not for my child seat – wonder what the wife would think about that?).

Be very careful. Fifty lbs of lead and acid could make for a very bad day. Remember that if you drop the battery, you’ll probably shorten its life by a significant amount.

Riding with 38 pounds of toxic waste in a kitty litter bucket hung off the back rack isn’t exactly relaxing.

Now this could be a transformative moment for the right bike shop. Perhaps the bike riding world is ready for the ZIP car of bikes – the rental cargo bike? Might be worth a call to your LBS. Just a thought.
