I am very sorry to hear this. Not fun. Not a good intersection.

Please look at WABA’s Bicycle Crashes FAQ

Are there not traffic cams pointed at that intersection? I have no idea who would own them and if you could get the tape.

When I have been in accidents, one thing that helps is to take pictures of everything, and yes, get witnesses names. As witnesses, its always good to hand people our cards.

    Not fun not fun.

I would also try craigslist.org and post something there about the accident. Good luck.

Thank you both for your suggestions and good wishes. The advice in the FAQs to gather witness information and have police establish an objective account even if the accident seems minor is absolutely correct. I am learning the hard way.

hopefully Virginia’s contributory negligence will help you out in this situation.

That intersection is just terrible. When I’m heading out of DC (i.e. coming up from TR Island) I always make sure to stop well clear of the intersection since people have a tendency to fly across Lee Highway en route to Georgetown cupcake, or whatever. From you description it sounds as though she was trying to pass behind you while you waited for the light, which is pretty good for you in a legal sense. Also, if she didn’t need medical assistance, then what is she getting litigious about. On that note, I would be careful with what you write online.

    I hope it works out!

If the other cyclist hit you from the rear, doesn’t it mean she’s at fault (as is the car with motor vehicles)? Or was this more of a t-bone situation?
