Photos of my new cast, post surgery, that I’m stuck with for six weeks due to a broken thumb beneath the second joint:

Turns out the plastic underside, which was molded by the rehab folks using hot water and a heat gun, can be easily manipulated by a hair dryer thus saving me a trip back to the hospital for an adjustment (the sidewall was hitting one of my pins). I’m really surprised it only required a couple of minutes of heating to make the material very malleable.

I guess this means sunbathing is out of the question – my arm would melt.

And on a side note, with all of the amazing techniques done in the operating room, this is the best science can come up with in terms of splints and casts? Talk about old world. Where am I going to stick my rhinestones?! Why can’t it be fake fur lined?

I’ll definitely be at Happy Hr. ;)

I’ll be driving (obviously) so if anyone needs a ride to/from, send me a PM. I can also fit a bike or two in the back of my car.

Big frownie! Heal up fast, KLizotte!

This is not at all for comparison and more for comic relief, as I can still ride, however gingerly. For those who are merely splint-ed, not cast-ed. This is the reward for clipping a tree and somehow breaking the fall with one finger. I’m being all kinds of rude to everyone I pass when I grab the brakes.

I think your splint would look amazing covered in rhinestones. Every gal needs her bling!

Whoohoooo. Got my pins out today :) 4 weeks and 1 day since surgery. Yes, they pulled them out with sterilized pliers (surprisingly big ones I might add). The first pin came out with no pain at all and the second caused a small ouchie. No worse than pulling off a band-aid. Did feel mighty odd though; definitely felt like having nails pulled out of one’s hand. The longest pin was about 1.75 inches long. Unfortunately I forgot to take my camera and my phone doesn’t take pics. What surprised me was when the doc put the pins down next to my hand and asked me if I brought my camera. He seemed disappointed that I hadn’t.

Unfortunately I’ve got two more weeks left in the exoskeleton (splint) then rehab. I’m really hoping I can make to the Seagull Century at the end of Sept.

What? You didn’t get to keep the pins as souvenirs of your misadventure? What’s wrong with our healthcare system?

Talk about a fantastic conversation starter….Wanna see my pins?

Thank goodness you’re all better. The end is in sight and think of all the fun you’ll having getting into century riding shape in less than a month!
