ParticipantI totally agree. I see this guy James off of the Couthouse Metro. He is an expert at finding the pain spot and working it. I went to him for my hip. Not only did he work on it hard (PAIN!!!!) but he gave me stretches to work on it on my own. I highly recommend it if you bike regularly and get overuse issues. Also works good if you lift weights. Even if you do it properly with good form, you will get tightness in areas you can’t quite stretch out.
Also, I really like this book “The Stark Reality of Stretching” He goes into immense details about how to properly stretch while still somehow keeping it simple. He talks you through the most important stretches. Super valuable.

ParticipantIf anyone is looking for a massage therapist, my ladyfriend specializes in therapeutic massage and does excellent work. She works in Alexandria, though she’ll do house calls too depending on location. I’d be happy to refer anyone who is interested.

ParticipantMy former running coach also does massage therapy and lots of wellness stuff and is AWESOME. He’s out in Herndon or Reston or somewheres out there in the wild west, if anyone out that way is looking for someone to go to.

ParticipantYou lost me at “nothing to do with sex.”

Participant+1 for massage. I generally get one during the middle of a big training block or before a big event. Got one schedule for next Tuesday, which will give me a few days recovery before Ironman NYC next weekend!

ParticipantI had my first massage a few weeks ago on my honeymoon cruise…maybe some prudish remnant of my uber-conservative evangelical upbringing seeped out of the dark corner of my brain into which I’ve locked it away, but the whole experience just seemed kinda awkward to me. And the massage itself felt good, but I wouldn’t say that I really felt “better” afterwards…of course, that could be a sign that I’m a little too laid back, since clearly I didn’t have a lot of tension built up.

ParticipantI was once desperate when I got neck pain a few years ago just before a family vacation. My doctor suggested Thermacare heat wraps and Aleve. It got me through the vacation pain free. Mercifully, the pain did not return.
I also got muscle relaxants once and they worked like a charm.

My guess is that a relaxing cruise ship “spa day” massage is different than a deep tissue sports massage. Right after a sports massage I feel phlegmy, dehydrated and a little wobbly on my feet (almost a feeling of inebriation). The next day I light on my feet and everything feels loose and I legs have an extra snap to them on the bike.

Participant+1,000 for drugs. I herniated a disc playing rugby and could barely move until I found my friends Codeine and Valium. Also, don’t forget NMTI up on Route 7. One hour massage for $35. Most of the time they are okay, but they are students.

ParticipantYou have never had a massage until you go to a Turkish bath house (and no, they’re not sexual contrary to some pop culture)–however that’s also like the deepest cleaning possible of your skin to a level you didn’t think was possible.

Gonna check that book out ASAP. Massages are pretty magical. When I was young I played competitive tennis and taught at a pretty posh club. My knees ache to this day because of it but we did get free massages once a week, it was bliss!

I don’t view myself as a pervert, just someone with alternative hobbies. You know, like owning too many damn bikes.
As for drugs, love the idea in theory but if they are effective they either send me into a coma or wreck my stomach.

Is there such a thing as owning to many d**n bikes? I was always told that the proper number of bikes is N+1, unless you are married when it is more likely S-1.

Yeah when you get it you will think “wow not much to this book” but then as you read and hear him talk you through the stretches, you will be shocked at how wrong we were all doing it. Plus, he gives good reasons for the way he has you do things, which helps people like me who are always questioning things.
