I seek advice on repairing a Trek 7.1 hybrid

After an unfortunate accident the rear wheel can no longer be trued, breaking spokes often.

It needs a new wheel 700 X 35. My questions are:
1. where to buy on line?
2. how do I tell if the gears are a cassette or freewheel?
3. long story but I misplaced a couple of washers on one of the rear brake pads. Where can I get washers?

For between $100 and $125 a local shop can get you a new wheel and install it.

Amazon.com can get you a wheel for between $60 and 80 of similar quality and you can install it yourself.

A trek 7.1 will have a cassette.

Actually, the current specs say that the 7.1 FX has a 7 cog freewheel. If the cogs are spun off the hub and the ratchet mechanism is with the cogs, its a freewheel. If after after unscrewing the “nut” the cogs come straight off and the ratchet mechanism remains with the hub, it is a cassette. In general, with 7 cogs or less, it is a freewheel. 8 cogs or more is likely a cassette.

For online cheap wheels, I would look at nashbar or niagaracycle. The 35 refers to the width of the tire, not the rim. For that size tire, I would look for wider rims.
