    also, so I don’t clog up the forums with other useless drivel (hah! sarcasm, since I do that all the time anyways… see what I did there?)

    when it comes to cycling jersey sizes, I’m always confused. I bought the awesome looking WABA jersey in XL, which usually is perfect for me. This thing was TINY around my BIG gut :( (no problem, gave it to my son). So I get the whole “sport cut” vs “pathlete cut” thing, but when looking at jersey sizing charts, does “waist” size mean anything? Here’s an example. Because normally an XL is fine, unless it’s a sport cut. This page doesn’t say anything about what type of cut these jerseys are, but I see the waist size on that chart for XL is 37. My waist is REALLY close to that (hah! lies), but I just don’t know if waist is part of that sizing chart generically for their shorts too?

    I like these, and want one, but they’re out of XXL if the XL is “sport cut”.

    My rule of thumb is, for mainstream stuff like PI or LG, if it’s full zip, go a size up. If you’re buying stuff like Castelli or Capo, my understanding is that you probably need to go yet another size up from that. For instance, my pullover Endura jerseys I wear in Large, but all my full zips need to be XL because they’re “club cut” which is “loose fitting” (hah!). For most low/mid-range stuff, I think you can safely assume that full zip = club cut. The higher end stuff is usually “race cut” which is supposed to fit pretty snug. I just ordered a Castelli team jersey and got a 2XL, which makes me feel really un-slim, but I’m pretty confident an XL would’ve been too small because I prefer a looser fit.

    I will be glad to donate — I do enjoy cycling in Maryland, though I don’t get to do it often enough. And always happy to support advocacy efforts all over the region. However, why is the “Aluminum” giving level higher than the “Steel” giving level? I like both, but I know some people consider Steel the ultimate frame material.

    Certifried, you just hijacked your own thread! Anyway, yes, it means something. All ready to wear apparel (which includes cycling gear) is made to a set of standard measurements. You should put a tape measure around your natural waist and compare it to the size chart. That said, there are vast differences in the ease built into different types of garments and as TwoWheelsDC points out, a lot of cycling jerseys are designed to fit close (e.g., have little ease). Sizing up causes a different problem — the shoulders are too loose — so manufacturers came up with the “Club Fit” which is more generous through the waist. Each manufacturer resolves the dillemma slightly differently, so I’d say just keep trying on jerseys until you find a manufacturer that fits to your satisfaction and then buy your jerseys from them.

    thank you! I’m trying to get a bit more involved in advocacy. BikeMD seems to be the big one in Maryland. Unfortunately, they’re out of Baltimore so it’s difficult for me to get too involved :( I know there’s some stuff in MoCo, so I’m trying to get involved in that.

    Yes, and no. Part of my reason was to also drum up interest in their jerseys (which are kind of cool) that also hopefully helps them out too ;)

    Yeah, the problem is when I come across cool jerseys that are made by different organizations. The WABA jersey was a perfect example, I learned my lesson about “sport cut” from that. I’d never heard of it before. Imagine my surprise when I got the XL jersey and couldn’t even put it on! (I cried for days). So trying to decipher fit charts and actual cuts has become a necessity, especially when jerseys are relatively expensive.

    In the same way that Capital Bikeshare started out as an Arlington idea until D.C. suggested that the two combine to create a regional network, this forum started as an Arlington project. Then D.C. (goDCgo) and WABA joined the project. The address is still bikearlingtonforum.com but the greeting line says “Welcome to the Washington Area Bike Forum, presented by BikeArlington, goDCgo and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association.”

    Maryland is already included. But maybe after they start up their CaBi operations next year, a Maryland bike organization can get formal recognition as a partner at the top of the page. Until then, Maryland residents are still allowed to post here. As long as they can answer the question about what their favorite color is…

    already bought one :) It was the last “larger” size they had at the time. I think they’ve re-stocked since. They had an XXL and a XS, and I needed it before the Arlington Fun Ride! So I snagged the XXL, which is definitely XXL…. it’s a little big on me, but it makes me happy because I used white-out on one of the X’s and it always makes me think I’m losing weight still!

    Just a small point of order, FWIW – Bike Maryland is a statewide org, with something of a focus on the Baltimore area. I suppose the Virginia Bike Federation is similar, with its gravity coming from Richmond (though it doesn’t host events/have staff like Bike Maryland does). WABA covers the entirety of our region (i.e., DC proper, Montgomery and Prince Georges counties, Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, and Fairfax (in partnership with FABB)). Someone pray for the poor souls in Prince William County, please :)

    Interesting. A very important point of order to me, actually. I know bikeMD is more Baltimore oriented, but wasn’t really aware that WABA was that deeply involved with MoCo. Being as I’m already a WABA member, this is excellent news. I’d like to hear more about how I can help advocacy in my county.

    Glad I posted that, then! WABA does quite a bit of work in MoCo, and is MoCo is ably represented on our board by a number of MoCo residents. You might also find the document we debuted at the Regional Call to Action Summit worth a read. As a WABA member, you should be getting MoCo-specific action alerts when issues needing a bit of public support arise. Happy to chat more about this.
