OK, after 3+ years of frequent biking to work I had my first crash. More like a “I fell off my bike while moving” than a crash. Only a few blocks of my 15-mile round trip is commute is on a sidewalk. I wiped out in Herndon on Van Buren sidewalk. Moved into the grass to give a runner some room and hit a ditch, couldn’t get back up on the sidewalk (concrete was lifted up and had a big lip) and went over into the dirt. I didn’t even need a band-aid. No bike damage that I can see.

It makes me a little grumpy that I was on the sidewalk to avoid holding up traffic on the narrow 2 lane stretch of Van Buren. I think the road is safer, but I’ll be honked at for sure. All those drivers who cut through Herndon love taking these two lane roads but hate to be slowed down. boo hoo

Hey, no problem. I’m OK this morning. By the looks of my shirt I must have willed myself to pull in my arms and land on my shoulder/side. Obviously I’ve been instilled with some sort of proper fall training from my years of skateboarding in middle school. There were no cellphones back then, so survival was key in the Western PA suburbs.

Glad to hear you’re doing alright!

I didn’t get off quite as easy. Fractured Acetabular means at least a month of recovery for me.

On the bright side, this will make waiting to make my next bike purchase until 2014 models come out and 2013 prices drop a bit easier! Test rides will have to wait.

Whew, had to look that one up and ouch, that doesn’t sound good. Rest, relax and hope you feel better soon.

Yeah – the good ole’ hip socket. I wonder if the injury is due in part to the mechanics of riding fixed-gear. I can’t recall exactly where my pedal stroke was when I went down, but the upward force of the pedal on my leg may have been part of the cause. The fracture is on the socket, where the femur sits – upward force may have been enough pressure to fracture. Kind of like cracking a mortar with a pestle…if that analogy makes any sense.

Then again, I’m no expert on biomechanics.

Aww, man. So sorry about the fracture.

Pretty good analogy, if you ask me. Sorry to hear about the fracture, and hope it heals quickly.

Good thing you weren’t riding geared – the injury might have been multiplied.

    :)

Seriously I’m sorry to hear that and hope you heal well.

Yeah, 48 x 17 is enough! Imagine the injury level if I had been on a 52X26….OVER 9000!

[bonus points for obscure-ish internet reference?]
