Best not to follow or take the Rules to seriously. (Except #5 #9 and #43)

Rule 14: Shorts Should Be Black is a pretty darn good rule to follow too.

But that rule can be broken too … if your name is Lizzie Armitstead (now Deignan).

I can’t really agree with that one either. You know I like to wear all black, but I’ll also proudly sport orange, red, or blue (MTB) shorts. Of course, they’re likely talking tights because they wouldn’t wear MTB shorts on a road bike. But I would.

Me too! In fact, I did a road ride in jeans on Saturday (while wearing MTB shoes and cleats and a helmet with a visor, I might add). I break ALL the rules. Except Rules #5, #9, and #43.

In the course of looking up rule 43, I found another one I didn’t know about – I bet almost all of us have broken #56 now and then ;)

Especially on commutes and causal rides, I’m a big fan of mixing everything up for the sake of comfort. There’s a limit to the level of tight bike clothing I want my coworkers to see me in, so it ends up being MTB shoes, bike shorts, and a lose-ish running shirt. And if I could find MTB shorts or more casual shorts with good chamois, I’d wear those too on my commute, even though I’m on a road bike.

On long rides I comfort myself with rule #10. I figure if I convince myself it’ll never get easier, I’ll keep going vs deciding I’m just out of shape and need to stop for the day. It definitely works, and has helped me power through alot of ruts.

Sometimes I… wear my running gear instead of cycling garb when biking casually.

+1. My favorite winter bike “tights” are actually jogging pants. I’m astounded they’ve lasted for years without yet wearing out and I’ll be heartbroken when they finally do.

Also, I often wear bike clothes (no chamois) to jog in, which is probably in violation of some rule or another somehow. Why does running gear not come with pockets?!?!?

FLIPBELTS! I agree though. Runners need back pockets too. Instead they just went ahead and invented a whole new wardrobe item vs just improving the ones they have

(I use a flipbelt on a bike too sometimes when I don’t feel like wearing a jersey. They’re useful).

I’ve sometimes used my long sleeve jersey or one of my bike jackets on long runs just for the pocket layout.

Yeah, I’d never buy running shorts that didn’t have pocketses.

Fox sells MTB shorts with removable liners, so, if desired, you can cut the strings on the liners they come with and use whatever chamois you prefer.

I was judging you the entire time for this.

This comment–this whole thread–sings to me!

When I was 6 and hopped off the school bus, the first thing I did was get on my bike. Didn’t matter what I was wearing — nobody cared and it was the best part of the day! A few decades later, getting on the bike still tops the list (with the exception of hanging out with the fam). Granted, I care more about performance, safety, and comfort than I did way back then, but it’s always been about having fun and keeping a firm grip on liberty. This applies to training, commuting, even racing. Last December I had the fine honor of having my butt handed to me by a guy wearing jorts and a sleeveless jean jacket during Rustbucket Races in Norfolk — he performed fantastically and there was nobody there to rib him about his kit or anything else.
I think things like The Rules and http://www.reddit.com/r/bicyclingcirclejerk are well and good so long as we don’t take ourselves too seriously. Tonight at CCWNS I’ll be the guy wearing a mountain bike helmet, MTB shoes, and riding a gravel grinder and my grin will be just as broad as it was way back when I was a kid!

Yeah, but if he had well-honed tan lines, he was certainly a ringer…

    Liar!

As evidence for this charge, I present Rule #12. :p
