Not sure I’d listen to them, since IME their rides are the worst-led ones I’ve ever personally attended. :p

ParticipantWell, you can go to the PPTC workshop in Veirs Mill on April 6 and ask questions.

ParticipantLeague of American Bicyclists has an entire text and class on the topic. So does IMBA. I’ve been doing it for 30+ years, so I have a little background on the topic.

But I don’t think Bob is trying to lead anyone to certain death.

Yeah, I saw that announcement. That’s what prompted me. A lot of this I am doing instinctively. But I would like to create an idiot list for volunteers. Will try to make a generic version and post it.
This looks good: http://www.westchestercycleclub.org/pdf/Ride_Leader_Guidelines.pdf

ParticipantIf you want my thoughts on dealing with the particular challenges of leading a ride of younger and older teens, feel free to ask at FCC II one of these days.
The LAB book is $29 and we LCIs can order it.

ParticipantThe LAB Group Ride clinic is a subset of the Smart Cycling course.
- Rules for riding in a group
- Communication when riding in a group
- Skills: Obstacle dodging
- Skills: Riding in Proximity
- Skills: Dodging in Proximity
- Skills: Emergency Stop
- Fun Practice: Emergency Stop Context
If you really want to learn the technique in a formal way, take one of WABA’s Confident City Cycling classes. These are AWESOME!!!! Expert cyclists will 1) Learn a lot from the class… much more than you ever imagined; and b) You’ll learn a TON about how to teach others. You won’t be ready to teach the class on your own, but you’ll learn a lot about how to communicate with others.
Classes are on the calendar. Best of all, they’re FREE!

ParticipantBTW Here is an excellent manual for leading group youth rides. One Revolution at a Time: A Guide to Starting and Running Youth Bike Ride Clubs.
I also found this, which would be useful for potential ride leaders to read: Liability and Risk Management Issues for Cycling Clubs
