My idea: shine your headlight at the driver and pass your hand in front of your light 2-3 times to get their attention, then point at them and back at your light. If they turn their headlights on, wave or give a thumbs up to show thanks.

That’s precisely what I have done the handful of times I have seen it. Usually the driver is moving too fast or at an angle to me that they can’t quite see it. I would say the success rate is 50%, but you have to do it with your hand several times until they pick up on it.

I learned a hand signal to indicate “turn your lights on” — imagine a loose fist, with the fingers pointing away from the body, then open the fist so that your hand is open, showing your palm to the driver. Repeat until you feel silly. Usually works.

Ah yes, the good ‘old “blinky hand”.

I think it’s usually called “jazz hands”.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll try out both the moving hand over the light and blinky hand techniques the next time I see a ninja driver (hopefully I won’t see one for a long time).
