At the end of last year Mikey (then known only to us as essigmw) asked what our new year’s resolution was going to be in terms of 2013 mileage: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?3540-New-Years-Resolution-how-many-miles

We checked in again in July for a mid-year update: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?5301-Halfway-point-of-2013-Goals-Resolutions-Update

With the new year around the corner it seems time to ask again. How did you do?

Here is where I’m ending up:

Goal for 2013 — 3500 miles. Blew that one out. Strava has me at 6601 with a few days of riding remaining.

    Non-distance bike-related goals:
    1. Stop lurking on the forum and post — Check. Now I’m a Senior Member
    2. Commute through winter. Check. Thanks Freezing Saddles 2013.
    3. Ride a Century. Check. Oct 5th on the W&OD. Not fast but done.

Start thinking of your 2014 goals and I’ll post a thread for that in a few days (if someone doesn’t beat me to it)!

Planned on increasing commutes vs. aiming for specific mileage increases. My short commute does not lend itself to racking up the miles, but I was successful in biking to work more frequently. For 2014, aiming for an even higher biking percentage, commute-wise.

Justin, we have some forum members who would be happy to show you how to rack up miles on a short commute (anyone for Harper’s Ferry, the long way?). ;)

I didn’t make a resolution at the beginning of the year, but after FS I resolved to get at least 300 miles per month. So far I’ve made it, but I still have 24 miles left for December with three days remaining. I will make that happen on Mon or Tue.

Actually made it happen on Sunday after the rain stopped, so I made the 300/month with total mileage on the year of 4300+

What I like most is that probably 70% of my riding is transportation–going somewhere–rather than just riding. I like the just riding, too, but would love to see a lot more people on bikes going somewhere and using their bike as transportation. I like to tell people that a bike just makes you a “fast pedestrian.” You can hop on it and go somewhere: no special clothes, no high-tech stuff, no long preparation; just go.

    See you soon, I hope.

I know how to do that – my route home routinely includes “extra” miles just because. One day I’ll have fewer things competing for time such that the “long way” can be even longer and more varied!
