Is Mt. Weather paved to the top? Or would I have to be prepared for gravel and/or dirt? (not to be confused with being prepared for Dirt, of course).

It is paved all the way across the mountain from Bluemont to Paris and it is a hell of a climb.

Well, then I suppose I’ll have to try it. Try anything once, after that I’ll know better.

Just make sure you don’t loiter at the FEMA compound…

Are you saying that if I do, I’ll REALLY know better next time?

There’s some good steep stuff between the ridge on Mt Weather and the river. Really steep. You can make a decent loop of it. Something like this (either direction is good):

Doing a few loops of that route sounds like an *excellent* hill workout. I still remember the Catoctin area being prettier / more interesting, but Mt. Weather is probably a little closer.

I think Mark Blacknell had an “interaction” with the FEMA guards up there a while back, so it definitely happens!

The biggest climb I’ve done is Lamb’s Knoll. Including the approach on Reno Monument Rd. 1000ft in 3 miles. http://www.strava.com/segments/748674?filter=overall

The infamous Coxey Brown (http://www.strava.com/segments/667971) gains 991ft in 1.9 miles. Or Hamburg Road (http://www.strava.com/segments/620165) is 1037ft in 3.2 miles.

A big climb but not terribly difficult is the Catherine Furnace fire road in Shenandoah:

It is a gravel road however but worth the effort.

I found these routes the first time by googling a route named “OMGWTF”. Then I rode it.

    OMGWTF!
